Thanks are also extended to friends and colleagues of the University of Northern Colorado Department of History and Michener Library, who encouraged us in the completion of this project. Finally, we are especially grateful to Phylabe Houston, who preserved the letters and constantly encouraged the editorial work, and Edith Base Bacon, who placed her World War II diary at our disposal, critically read the introduction and the edited letters, wrote a short biographical sketch, and unselfishly gave of her time, literary skills, and journalistic experience.

Introduction
The correspondence in this volume provides a very intimate and individualized account of everyday life in wartime London at the hand of a highly literate and acute observer. Sometimes written while bombs were falling and the author, Edith Base, was in a shelter or on duty as an air-raid warden, the letters were, in many instances, a form of therapeutic exercise. Through them Edith sought psychological relief and escape from the drudgery, the endless boredom, the bone-numbing fatigue, and the inescapable fear in a city besieged.
