Foreword
Baptised simply George the son of Michael in the small town of Viz or Vizyi* in eastern Thrace (near Edirne in what is today the European province of Turkey), Vizyenos (Viziins) took his surname from his birthplace. The anonymity or double identity conferred on him by his entry into the world of letters as Georgios M. Vizyenos was scornfully noted by his mother: "Nowadays, when they write about him in the newspapers, even I don't know if it's really my own child they're talking about, or some European!" (Moullas 1980:7172). Confusion of identity and the doubling of reality are themes that haunt the six long stories of Vizyenos and provide the mainspring for one of the most original departures in Greek, and even European, fiction of the latter part of the nineteenth century.
