Timeline of Events
The history of the Totenkopf Division is one of two partsthe three-year
period from October 1939 to October 1942 when the division was not
designated a panzer division, and the period November 1942 to May
1945, when it was. It was in this latter period that the 3rd SS Panzer
Regiment was formed.
November 1942:
3rd SS Panzer Regiment
formed, in France.
November 1943:
Totenkopf involved in
the battle for Krivoi Rog,
lasting several weeks.
February 1943:
Totenkopf Division
transferred to the Eastern Front.
February 19, 1943:
Third battle
of Kharkov opens. 3rd SS Panzer
Regiment receives its rst Tiger tanks.
March 15, 1943:
The third
battle of Kharkov closes with
a German victory.
July 5, 1943:
Operation
Citadel
,
the German attempt to close
the Kursk salient, opens.
July 14, 1943:
With the
Wehrmacht having exhausted
itself, Hitler shuts down
Citadel

August 2, 1943:
The Soviets penetrate
the Mius Front. After bitter ghting,
3rd SS Panzer Regiment reduced to 20
tanks.
August 3, 1943:
3rd SS Panzer Regiment
involved in the fourth battle of Kharkov.
August 23, 1943:
Red Army victorious
at Kharkov. Totenkopf begins ghting
withdrawal to the Dnieper.

Iron Cross 2nd class with original pouch, an Iron
Cross 1st class in a presentation box and yellow
cardboard outer box, and a bronze Panzer Badge.

Totenkopf Division surrenders to
11th U.S. Armored Division, in Czechoslovakia.

U.S. forces hand German POWs
over to Red Army, to begin transfer to Odessa.
February 1944:
3rd
SS Panzer Regiment
attempts to relieve the
Korsun Pocket.
April 4, 1944:
3rd SS Panzer
Regiment retreats
over the Dniester,
into Romania.
May 7, 1944:
3rd SS
Panzer Regiment
successfully holds
the Red Army at
the second battle of
Trgu Frumos.
