Foreword
Many years ago, I began the speaking engagements that were to become perhaps the most enjoyable of all my Ranger duties. From the beginning, I loved sharing my ideas and opinions with an audience, and soon I found myself in demand for speeches to groups all over Texas and in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. I developed quite a good feeling about it and began to agree with the people who praised my effortsI was pretty smart, and what I had to say was surely important!
One day in the 1950s, I gave a talk in my home town of Gainesville in which I commented on the recent Supreme Court ruling on school integration. While I did not find fault with the justices' opinion, I did say that I thought black children would be at a disadvantage if placed immediately into classes with white children.
