ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Hard Travelin': The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie arose out of the productive collaboration of a number of people: Woody's family and friends, musicians, managers, journalists, scholars, fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum staff, faculty and staff at Case Western Reserve University, and people at Severance Hall and the Odeon concert club. We owe them all our heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation. We hope Hard Travelin' lives up to their expectations.
First and foremost, this book could not have been written without the support of the Woody Guthrie Archives. Our appreciation goes to Nora Guthrie and Harold Leventhal, who not only were intimately involved in creating the Hard Travelin' program but who also served as sounding boards and provided access to numerous primary source materials. Thanks also to Anna Rotante, George Arevalo, and Amy Danielian for all their assistance.
This book owes its existence to the events that made up the first American Music Masters series in 1996. Its content is primarily inspired by remarks made by panelists at the Case Western Reserve University conference, including Robert Cantwell, Ronald Cohen, Anthony DeCurtis, Peter Glazer, Arlo Guthrie, Fred Hellerman, James Henke, Joe Hickerson, Joe Klein, Guy Logsdon, Jimmy Longhi, Dave Marsh, Charles McGovern, Jeff Place, and Craig Werner, many of whom also contributed essays to the book. Thanks to the additional contributorsMary Katherine Aldin, Ellen G. Landau, David R. Shumway, and Pete Seegerwho made up the difference. We also acknowledge the assistance of staff and the faculty of the American Studies program at Case Western Reserve University, our partner for the conference, and in particular John Bassett, Atwood Gaines, Sandra Golden, Park Goist, Gladys Haddad, Barbara Klante, and William Marling.
The musical performances held that September weekend were essential to creating the special atmosphere out of which this book grew. We wish to recognize Chris Risner of Belkin Productions and the staff at the Odeon concert club, as well as Richard Worswick, Gary Hanson, and the rest of the Severance Hall staff for being such great partners in this endeavor.
Our sincere appreciation goes as well to all the artists who donated their time and talent to celebrate Woody in song: Dan Bern, Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco, Joe Ely, Alejandro Escovedo, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Arlo Guthrie, John Wesley Harding, Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers), Jorma Kaukonen, Jimmy LaFave, Country Joe McDonald, Paul Metsa, Ellis Paul, David Pirner, Tim Robbins, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Syd Straw, and the cast of Woody Guthrie's American Song (Lisa Asher, Mimi Bessette, David Lutken, Jim Stein, Jeff Waxman, and Neil Woodward). Thanks to Sam Ellis for coordinating the American Song performance. Thrill Hill Productions deserves our special gratitude for helping make the Severance Hall concert go off without a hitch. Finally, acoustic performances by RRHFM Musicians Collective members Kevin Richards, Charles Mosbrook, and Jason White were great additions to the weekend.
We thank the staff of the RRHFM Education DepartmentRuthie Brown, Katie Haggerty, Santina Protopapa, Lisa Vinciquerra, Deborah Wentz, and Martha Woodrufffor all their support and hard work, both on the production of the initial Hard Travelin' events and on the subsequent book. Thanks go as well to Sally Anderson, Celeste Drehs, Suzan Evans, Ileen Sheppard Gallagher, Andy Golding, James Henke, Erin Hogan, Jon Landau, Ronald Zambetti, and the rest of the RRHFM staff and board members for their support and assistance.
Kenny Barr, John Kircher, and Eileen Rehbein were indispensable sources of support and expertise throughout the Hard Travelin' program. Thanks go to Sarah Lazin, for her advice; to Stephanie Smith at the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, Smithsonian Institution, for her research assistance; to Phyllis Barney and the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance; to Mark Schwartz and Tim Lachina of Nesnadny & Schwartz for making the American Music Masters design work a labor of love; to the Ohio Lottery Commission for sponsoring the conference; and to Barry Goldenberg for coming in at the last minute to photograph the artwork in this book.
Finally, we owe much to Wesleyan University Press; to Tom Ratko for committing to the American Music Masters book series; and to Suzanna Tamminen, our editor, who came up with the initial idea of creating a book out of the Hard Travelin' conference and whose patience and advice have been much appreciated.

AMERICAN MUSIC MASTERS
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum preserves, exhibits, and interprets the living heritage of rock and roll and its related music forms. Through programs, publications, and exhibitions, the museum aims to increase public knowledge and appreciation of the music and its history, to enhance public awareness of rock and roll's vital role in society, and to promote the study of popular music and its culture. The American Music MastersTM series annually explores the legacy of an Early Influence inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame through a conference, performances, and other programs.
The Woody Guthrie Archives was created in 1995 to catalogue, preserve, and perpetuate the artistic and personal legacy of Woody Guthrie. The core of the collection comes from Woody's wife, Marjorie, who saved thousands of lyrics, songbooks, diaries, essays, manuscripts, letters, artwork, and photographs. The Archives also creates new projects that will continue to bring Woody's unknown, unseen, and unheard works back to the world and to the people from which he drew his inspiration.
