ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Acknowledgments are in order, all right. Having completed Chicago Cubs: Seasons at The Summit, I'm aware now, more than ever, just how much we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before. Many a baseball writer, many a baseball historian, and many a baseball researcher have paved the way with countless bits of information just waiting for a theme. To all of them, I tip my cap.
Some time ago I picked up Donald Honig's Baseball America. I'm not above admitting that his prose stirred and inspired me. Though I've never had the privilege of meeting him, I hope that day comes, because I'd like to acknowledge personally the lift his writing has given me.
Then, too, I owe a personal debt of gratitude to one of my fine Christian friends, Ernie Harwell, who has been supportive and helpful in his own kind way. Always cheerful and forward-looking, Ernie has been an inspiration not only to me, but to legions of baseball fans throughout the continent.
For a baseball writer to have the expertise and information of a Pete Palmer available when those extra touches are needed, or when accuracy and precision are demanded-that's good fortune beyond description. Thanks, Pete, for your patience and insight and for just plain being available.
Our catalyst and major domo, Mike Pearson, of Sagamore Publishing, deserves special kudos. His upbeat, can-do attitude and selfless dedication to all the "necessaries" kept us on track and on target.

This book would not have been completed without the help and support of many people: Eddie Gold, for his assistance in uncovering players' uniform numbers; Marion Grimm, for her stories about her late husband, Charlie, and his players, and for granting us access to her book collection; George and Mary Brace, for their help in securing photos; the peerless people at Sagamore Publishing; and my family: my wife Dona, and my daughters Julie, Kelly, and Katie.

INTRODUCTION
The Chicago White Stockings, later to become Wrigleyville's loveable Cubbies, were charter members of the National League, and the only original franchise that has operated continuously in the same city between the first game played on April 22, 1876, and today. During that time, upwards of 1,750 ballplayers have pulled on Cub uniforms, and out of that number we've taken the players who have put together individual seasons of such magnificence that they've merited our top 50 billing.
From Al Spalding to Cap Anson to the Peerless Leader, Frank Chance, and on to 'Ole Pete Alexander and Hack Wilson; from Gabby Hartnett and Billy Herman on to Ron Santo and "Let's Play Two," Ernie Banks; and on to the more recent past with Billy Williams and Mark Grace, the famous and the not-so-famous are presented in rank order from the very best of the creme de la creme, on down through No. 50.
