Preface
After listening to the cassette tape of an old Johnson Family radio show in the summer of 1979, a friend wrote: "I have listened to it with great pleasure, and I will be sharing it with others who I am sure will also enjoy it. Thanks very much for sending it and for your contribution to our American heritage." These words were not only flattering but also motivational. I took another look at the phonograph records the family had made and jotted down a few notes here and there. Before I knew it, the narrative of my family's experiences had begun to take shape.
So, I set about to write the story of what radio station WBT in Charlotte, North Carolina, had called "one of America's foremost singing families"a family whose career peaked in popularity during the golden days of radio. This account puts together the life and times of the Johnson Family Singers and shows how on several occasions in dire circumstances we not only "sang for our supper" but found great pleasure and excitement in doing it.
Here is a tale of a persevering father, a devoted mother, and some talented children who achieved stardom despite modest beginnings. References to persons living or dead are intentional, making this story a saga of real people and of events that helped my family reach a position of national prominence at the zenith of radio's popularity, just before the proliferation of television sets in living rooms across the nation.
For thirteen years, from 1938 to 1951, even though we sometimes literally sang for our supper, we didn't always eat! Even so, we managed to perform on WBT, "the radio voice of the South," as well as on numerous CBS network programs. One of our Columbia records, "The Old Rugged Cross" (ZSP 7175), was included in that company's Hall of Fame Series. Another song, "The Death of Ellenton"
