Best Guns: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Best Guns" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This nearly encyclopedic gathering of gun knowledge deals with the world of shotguns in two distinct sections. The first, Americas Best, looks at each of the finest guns made in the United States during the Golden Age of gunmaking. Names such as Parker, A.H. Fox, L.C. SMith, Ithaca, Lefever, and others once were more than simply names on old guns; they were people and companies, inventively vying for a share of a growing gun market. Their efforts created guns of lasting value and fame.
In the second section, Todays Best, McIntosh explores the world of fine guns as it exists today, country by country, commenting on guns whose intrinsic merit qualifies them as best guns. He looks at the gunmaking centers of England, Italy, France, Belgium, and Spain and talks of the names that warm the hearts of those who appreciate the workmanship, dynamics, and feel of a fine gunnames such as Purdey, Holland & Holland, Granger, Fabbri, Piotti, Arrizabalaga, and...

Selected Bibliography

I was remiss in not including a bibliography in the original edition of this book. A lot of good, interesting books on high-quality shotguns have been published in the past hundred years or so, and some extremely important ones published in the past ten years. The following is by no means a complete list of whats been written, but these are books that seem to me especially useful in understanding the history and nature of the best-quality gun. A great many are out of print, unfortunately, but between the booksellers Ive listed and the bibliographic Web sites available, you should be able to get a copy of any of them without too much trouble.

I have not included any periodical articles here, for the simple reason that listing all the good ones would be a task beyond the limits of the time and energy available to me. I have, for instance, an entire file cabinet crammed with magazine pieces Ive clipped over the yearsand fifteen years worth of bound magazines I havent clipped. If you have a yen to delve into the magazine literature on fine guns, current and past issues of Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, and The Double Gun Journal will keep you busy for a long, long time.
