Foreword
Enos Mills was a lucky man. He was independent enough to set off at the age of fourteen for the West, where he landed at the foot of Longs Peak, as sweet a spot as you can find. He was eventually strong and healthy enough to climb and snowshoe most of that part of the state of Colorado that lies above tree line. He was sensible and sensitive enough to realize that animals were more than dinner encased in fur, Engelmann spruce more than timber in the raw, the Rockies more than a hiding place for mineralsand so he had the great joy of countless hours lying still and just watching. Most of all, perhaps, he was fortunate enough to meet John Muir in San Francisco. As a result of that encounter his life took on new purposeprotecting America's wild lands by showing them to all he could, by writing about them in his infectious, enthusiastic essays, and by forcing the politicians to rope them off from commerce.
