To the youth of today... This is just one story of what my genera tion did for our country and future generations during World War II. We didn't use or even know about drugs. We didn't need them because we got our "highs" flying airplaines and knowing we were serving our country. We only had one "gang," the Army Air Corps. We also felt that you, our future generations, would be worth our sacrifices.
To my wife for over thirty years, Mabel Lawson Cramer. You are the best thing to happen to me, and every day "you light up my life."
To my son, Capt. Alden S. Cramer, USAF. I have always been proud of you, and I'm pleased you took my place in the Air Force. To my granddaughter, Samantha Cramer. We went all the way to St. Vito, Italy, to see you when you were born; it was worth the trip.
To my grandson, Richie Cramer. You are all boy, so I know you must be enjoying your dad's assignment to Alaska. To my mother, Helen Winninger Cramer, for teaching me so many things about life and how to be a gentleman, even before I started school. You prepared me well.

To my grandmother, Margaret Boulware Cramer. You gave me a loving home after my mother died and continued her teaching of life. I shall never forget you.
To my uncle, Russell Elton Cramer. You were like a father to me, and I shall always remember you gave me my first new bicycle.
To my aunt, Marie Diskin Cramer. Your laughter always told me you were the one in the Cramer family with a wonderful sense of humor.
To my aunt, Verna Cramer Easton. You helped my grandmother raise me as though I was your own son but you did spoil me. To my father, William Lowell Cramer, Sr. I always regretted we did not have a meaningful father-son relationship. However, that made me strive to succeed in everything I did, just to show you I could.

I would like to express my appreciation to many friends and associates for their kind criticism and guidance as I wrote this, my first book. Since this is an autobiography, I knew more about the subject than anyone else but did not know how best to relate the story to others. Tom Wilcox, a fellow evader and author of his own story, One Man's Destiny, took the time to edit completely and provide suggestions. Reading Tom's book inspired me to write my own.
At weekly readings before fellow members of the Trinity Arts Writers' Associates (TAWA), their critiques and suggestions were very valuable. Jack Fryrear and Jeff Buehner, who edited my manuscript from beginning to end, provided very worthwhile assistance.
