Although I was never privileged to know John Sloan personally I feel as if I knew him well, since I have spent many hours with his library, studying his notes and comments and his diaries. My studies have given me the feelings of respect and admiration for him that were shared by his friends and students. I know, too, that he was a direct and honest man, not afraid of expressing his opinions. In his day, when a newspaper wanted a thoughtor argument-provoking comment on the art world, it knew it could get a good one from John Sloan.
