ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
O ver the last four years many people have given Gavin and I their invaluable help towards the preparation of this book. Every effort has been made to acknowledge them but if we have inadvertently missed someone out on the list that follows, we sincerely hope we will be forgiven for this unintentional oversight. I am particularly grateful to my good friend Raymond Davidson of Glencairn Crystal who was largely instrumental in encouraging me to take on this mammoth project in the first case. Without his support we may never even have got started! We are also indebted to Jim Drysdale for his wonderful illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. To everybody concerned, our most grateful thanks.

FOREWORD
Since Alfred Barnard first published his epic book The Distilleries of the United Kingdom in 1887, many other fine books about Scotch whisky have been made available to the whisky lover. Over the centuries our national drink has been inspiring writers, scholars and distillers around the world. Every whisky writer has made his own inimitable contribution to furthering the knowledge of this wonderful spirit.
Now for the first time it is the turn of a blender to share his fascinating insights into the art of whisky blending. Richard Paterson is not just any blender he is a Master Blender with true passion for his craft, and his roots go back over three generations of whisky blenders. He began appreciating whisky with his father at the tender age of eight whisky almost literally runs in his blood. Now with over 40 years experience, The Nose as he is affectionately known in the trade, has become one of Scotlands most admired and respected blenders and his love of Scotch has taken him around the world. During his long career Richard has received a host of accolades Blender of the Year, Industry Leader of the Year, Distiller of the Year, Diageos Achievement of the Year award, and Master Keeper of the Quaich, to name but a few.
Although I have known Richard for many years, the first occasion I experienced his passion for whisky was back in 1993 when he was the guest speaker at our Dinner Clubs 30th Anniversary dinner. Not surprisingly, Richard took the opportunity to compare this milestone to the preparation of a rare 30-year-old blend. Within minutes he had captivated and enthralled us, not only with his in-depth, historical knowledge of Scotch whisky, but in particular his fascinating insight into the art of whisky blending. It was indeed a night to remember.
Such knowledge and passion cannot be forgotten. It must be recorded and passed on. With such interest in Scotch whisky today there has never been a better time to release such a book and delve into the mysteries which surround whisky blending. For the first time Richard has unlocked his sample room door to us and thrown away the key to expose its many secrets. Secrets which have in many ways remained hidden since the mid to late 19th century when Andrew Usher first began pioneering his blended whiskies.
And what better way to do it than with one of Scotlands greatest whisky writers Gavin D. Smith. Gavin has had an illustrious career in whisky writing, regularly contributing to many publications on the subject and writing no fewer than ten whisky books.
These two whisky gurus have combined their talents to give us a unique insight into the art of blending and what it takes to become a Master Blender. It is an illuminating and memorable journey. Like a great blended Scotch I heartily recommend you sip and savour the contents of this book. Taste the passion and feel the wonderful glow of that spirit inside you.
