INTRODUCTION
Welcome to The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia. Youre reading this book because you love James Bond movies, and so do I. Were part of an enormous, multigenerational group of worldwide fans who are fascinated by the long history of this storied film franchise. We watch the movies, debate their quality, and share our fondness for the worlds most enduring secret agent, James Bond, 007.
This encyclopedia is not just a reference guide, its a celebration of Bond. Open it to any page and youll be reminded of some specific details about the world of Bond that you enjoy: a sparkling line of dialogue, a photo of one of the stunning Bond girls, a cool gadget, an exotic location, a thrilling action sequence, the bio of a supporting player, or a behind-the-scenes tidbit. There will be things you know by heart, and some information that may surprise you. For instance, did you know that the first five James Bond movies were released in alphabetical order? Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice. I didnt even notice that until recently.

The last edition of this book was published in 2003, and I wanted to give this new version as much of a makeover as possible. So 90 percent of the photographs are new to the encyclopedia, thanks to some wonderful ladies and gentlemen all over the world who supplied me with a kaleidoscope of images (please see the ). Unlike my recent book The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia, which covers the complete span of Rod Serlings original black-and-white series, The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia is an ongoing enterprise. You have to keep adding in new details from the newest films to keep the book fresh. Fortunately, theres no reason to think 007s superspy adventures will end anytime soon. James Bond will return!
Roger Moore received mixed reviews as 007, but he revived the fortunes of the Bond franchise with increasingly spectacular action films in the 1970s and 1980s, which brought in family audiences in unprecedented numbers all over the planet. Courtesy of the Anders Frejdh Collection

A James Bond film encyclopedia without photos is going to gather a lot of dust on a bookstore shelf. And a fourth edition that just reprints the same pictures from the first three is also a non-starter. I thus had a huge challenge: to almost completely reillustrate the book. I accomplished it by contacting the worlds leading collectors, who offered magnificent cooperation. I owe them all my thanks.
I would like to start with Michael VanBlaricum and the Ian Fleming Foundation in Santa Barbara, California, which is devoted to the major task of preserving the legacy of Bond creator Ian Fleming, his many works, and the films based on them. This organization has also gone to enormous lengths to preserve many of the classic cars and gadgets that have appeared in James Bonds world. In addition, I owe an enormous debt to David Reinhardt, who has meticulously collected thousands of images covering every book edition and film. Based in Canada, David went out of his way to get me the highest-resolution images possibleno small task.
Traveling to Europe in the spring of 2019, I first stopped in London, where I spent some delightful time with special effects tech Brian Smithies, who was part of Derek Meddingss effects team, and who provided me with rare behind-the-scenes shots of the Meddings teams yeoman work on the Bond series. I then flew to Sweden and met with one of Europes most enthusiastic Bond fans, Anders Frejdh, who has an amazing collection of Bond-related material. Thank you, Anders, for being the perfect host and providing me with some outstanding images. Your enthusiasm for 007 is off the charts. From Sweden, I flew to Paris and met with another enormously enthusiastic Bond fan, Luc Leclech, who also brought amazing photographic materials to the table, as well as supplying me with some special shots from his friend Joel Villy.
For additional photographs, I would also like to thank David J. Barron, Joyce Bartle, Jon Burlingame (the esteemed author of The Music of James Bond), the Film Music Society, Robby Fraser and Kidder Erdman at Endeavor, Las Vegas News Bureau, Paul Maibaum, Malcolm McNeil and his magnificently well-stocked James Bond collection, the National Archives, Lee Pfeiffer and Cinema Retro magazine, Steve Oxenrider, Matt Rector at Fort Knox, Charles Sherman, Nicols Suszczyk, United Artists Releasing, Kenneth Willardt and Ulrich Mller-Jrgensen, and David Williams.
For the first time, Im featuring some extraordinary original art work supplied by Jeff Marshall of New York. When I first saw some of Jeffs work on one of the 007 pages on Facebook, I was blown away. I immediately contacted him and we, excuse the pun, bonded. Thank you, Jeff, for adding a wonderful new dimension to this tome. The same goes for another terrific artist, Paul Mann, who did the cool From Russia with Love and On Her Majestys Secret Service artwork. I am truly blessed by the contribution of these extraordinary men.
Additional kudos to the folks at Chicago Review Press, in particular my editor Devon Freeny, for his long hours at the desk. Devon, you deserve a decoration from the queen.
I would also like to tip my hat to William Koenig at the Spy Command blog, and my friend Jeff Hershow and his video archives in Los Angeles. A big thanks to Spy Movie Navigator for helping us promote this book to the world. And to my wife, Elisa, and my children, Jaymie and Darren, I dedicate this effort to you. Your love makes it all possible.
