The availability in this book of the original directors scripts to the two Dark Shadows movies provides the opportunity to read how Dan Curtis originally envisioned the films.
House of Dark Shadows
A full-length cut of House of Dark Shadows, including all the scripted scenes, would likely run between 114 and 117 minutes. However, approximately 20 minutes was not included in the final version. The resulting 97-minute theatrical cut (also known as a release print), was approved by Curtis. The deleted scenes, with estimated running times, follow.

Scene 21 | Maggie and Roger argue in the stable. (1 min) |
Scene 66-68c | Roger shows the Sheriff out, Jeff and Maggie confront Roger. (1-2 mins) |
Scene 80 | Carolyn, Roger and Liz discuss Daphnes recovery and Carolyns encounter with Willie (1 min) |

Scene 123 | Roger comforts Liz (30 secs) |
Scenes 135-137 | Stokes, Roger and the Sheriff discover Carolyns empty coffin (2 mins) |

Scene 158 | Jeff, Roger & co. rush to see the car crash (5 secs) |
Scene 165 | Todd wanders through the woods (5 secs) |

Scene 186 | Barnabas and Julia become friends (2 mins) |
Scene 191 | Maggie, Jeff and David at the greenhouse (1-2mins) |
Scene 193 | Willie warns Stokes about Barnabas (1-2 mins) |
Scene 235 | Jeff wakes and tests the crossbow (5 secs) |
In addition to the scenes listed above, Curtis eliminated the final shot of scene 126 where Carolyn bares her fangs and lunges at David. He also shortened scene 225 where the old man gives Jeff the note.
Curtis intended the film to stand by itself, without requiring the audience to be familiar with the television series. However, the finished cut has several gaps in the development of the story and leaves a number of questions unanswered. A complete version would have had more dialogue and character scenes between the violent portions. Instead, we never find out what happens to Daphne, why Maggie plans to leave Collinwood, why the police suddenly believe in vampires, or why Stokes doesnt warn anyone about Barnabas after he talks to Julia.
The final cut also has several scenes where characters refer to events in the story that were cut or were never shot. In scene 190, Barnabas tells Willie he has done something for Jeff, but the final cut never explains what. In the deleted greenhouse scene, it is revealed that Barnabas has arranged to have Jeffs paintings shown in a Boston gallery in order to get him out of the way when Barnabas makes his move on Maggie that night. In scene 195, in which Barnabas beats Willie with his cane, Willie tells Barnabas he has warned professor Stokes about himanother deleted scene.
The relationship between Julia and Barnabas develops quickly in the final cut as well. In one scene they are antagonists, one scene later they are friends and Julia is obviously in love with Barnabas. Deleted scene 186 shows them growing closer as Barnabas warms up to Julia and they walk arm-in-arm.
The original opening where Maggie searches the house for David and encounters the rest of the family would have helped to clarify who they are. Many non-Dark Shadows viewers have been confused, since almost a dozen characters are briefly introduced in the first five minutes. Viewers can mistake Jeff with Todd, Maggie with Daphne, and believe that Roger and Liz are husband and wife instead of sister and brother.
Dan Ross paperback novelization of the film was based on the original script and dramatizes the missing scenes, not taking into account any of the last minute rewrites or dialogue changes. The role of Nancy Hodiak was intended to be played by television regular Marie Wallace, but she left the series and was unavailable. Curtis cut the scene altogether, using some of its staging in Barnabas attack on Daphne.
There are several scripted scenes which were never shot; they are as follows:
Scenes 9-10 | Maggie explores the tower |
Scenes 69-77 | Barnabas stalks and kills Nancy Hodiak |
Scene 87 | Liz and Roger show Barnabas the Old House |
Scene 118 | Julia talks to Stokes at the cemetery |
Scenes 129-132 | Todd drives in the cemetery |
Scene 163 | Aftermath of the car wreck |
Scene 180 | Stokes tries to talk to Julia |
Scenes 182-183 | Julia watches the sun go down |
Scene 200 | Stokes tries to warn Maggie |
Scene 217 | Stokes and Roger explore the tower library |
Night of Dark Shadows
Before shooting began on Night of Dark Shadows, Curtis decided to drop the opening prologue with the hippie (scenes 1-27) and Claire and Tracys shopping trip (scenes 81-83.) TV series regular Michael Stroka was a candidate to play the hippie. Either Stroka or Keith Prentice (another DS alumni) would most likely have played the shop owner Gregory.
After production, Curtis was forced to delete approximately 25% of the finished film. This reduced an estimated 131 minute original running time to 94 minutes. The following scenes or sequences, with estimated running times, are not included in the release print:
