THE FORCE BEHIND THE FORCES
Swapnil Pandey is a popular author with a wide audience base. She loves to compile stories about life in the Indian Army and has previously authored Soldiers Girl (2017) and Love Story of a Commando (2019). Swapnil married into the fauji tribe thirteen years ago; since then her nomadic life in Army cantonments all over the country amongst extraordinary men and women has inspired her to come up with the most extraordinary stories.
Being a true believer in the nations responsibility towards the well-being of its soldiers and their families, she attempts to provide an authentic glimpse of the much-coveted Army life and its struggles in her work.
Also a professional blogger, Swapnil started producing motivational and informational videos during the pandemic, which have made an impact in highlighting various social issues faced by military families.
Swapnil is an alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and has worked with organizations such as Wipro and HDFC. She has also taught at Lovely Professional University and the Army Public School, to name a few of her ever-changing job profiles as the wife of an army officer. She has finally settled in the role of a full-time author.

These are real-life stories of bravehearts who made supreme sacrifices for the nation and their very courageous spouses. There is valour, grief, strength and determination. With romance and duty interwoven, each story touches the heart and brings tears as well as admiration.
It is tough to be a soldier, and even tougher to be his better half. Swapnil, with her depth of feeling and word power, leaves you with pathos and great respect for every veer nari.
Gen. V. P. Malik, PVSM, AVSM, ADC, Former Chief of the Army Staff
Swapnil Pandey chooses to dwell upon a segment of the Armed Forces fraternity, whose contribution has always been recognized but hardly written about. Mothers, wives, sisters and daughters silently bear the torture of separation and the agony of permanent parting. The threat of such parting looms over every Service family. Each narrative here will remind you of a hundred more unwritten cases. The nation owes them more than it ever cares to think about. Jai Hind!
Lt Gen. Syed Ata Hasnain, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM & BAR (retd) Former GOC 15 Corps
The Force Behind the Forces vividly brings to the fore profoundly moving and inspirational journeys of the veer narisas the wives of the fallen heroes of our Armed Forces are called. Through these individual stories of struggle, fortitude and hope, the book delves into the psyche of these families and succeeds admirably in bringing this subject into public consciousness.
Wing Commander M.A. Afraz (retd), Founder, Honourpoint (an online memorial for every Indian soldier)
A military book with a difference. Libraries are full of books on our soldiers and their valour, but kudos to Swapnil Pandey for bringing out the sacrifices and the valour of the women behind them. A must-read by all Indians to understand our soldiers and their lives better.
Vikas Manhas, social worker and motivational speaker
When we are apart, you still have my heart,
The nation feels safe under your guard.
You have your orders from your Command,
To go fight a war,
To be sent away is always a plan.
My faith tells me nothing will fall apart,
And my tears are only a matter of chance.
I am proud of what you do,
and the person you are.
But, my love,
its tough to be a soldier, and
even tougher to be his better half.
Dedicated to all the veer naris who, in their quest of finding strength, inspire us all. Know you are not alone and the nation stands with you all.
The author, Swapnil Pandey, who has written many books on defence lives, and who herself is an Army wife, depicts pain and pride, valour and victory, and love and care in the Army, with great sensitivity in this book titled The Force Behind the Forces. She has covered the lives of seven veer naris and their families. Each has some similarity with the others, and yet plenty of uniqueness in its portrayal of dealing with personal loss, running of the household, planning for the future, bringing up the children, and helping the wives face the realities of life. The veer nari herself needs to understand how her young offsprings would deal with the future they do not even comprehend. She is expected to be strong, caring and compassionate for the young as much as for the rest. The burden of expectations is not easy to bear.
Swapnil has managed to extract the real self of the veer nari, with patience and sanctity. I am confident she will continue to bring the bravery and strength of such women to her readers, in the future as well. This will help the nation to know the sacrifices of a brave woman who not only stands with her soldier in the times of peace and war, but also continues to march on if he unfortunately does not return home.
Having worked in the War Widows Association, New Delhi, for over a decade, first as Secretary and now as President, I have come across many cases where war/conflict widows have been through all kinds of difficulties yet they choose to live with great pride in the sacrifice their husbands have made. I feel a lot more should be done by the nation. My best wishes for the response this book deserves, and the empathy the reading should generate. I wish to add that I have felt each and every emotion the brave naris have been through, and would have to live with forever. May God give them strength and the ability to live a dignified life despite their biggest loss.

I know I am singularly fortunate to have been surrounded by soldiers throughout my life. Being a soldiers daughter, sister, wife, and mother, I also know what it takes to be the army behind the army. My most recent identity is as Meghna Girish, mother of hero Veer Major Akshay Girish, who courageously and successfully led his men to save the lives of his countrymen and defend the nation. It is an identity I wear with pride.
Despite the painthat is a constant we have lived with since losing our precious child in the prime of his lifemy husband and I know we are blessed to be a bravehearts parents. In the years that followed the tragic event, we found ourselves face to face with a heartbroken young wife trying to cope with the loss of her beloved husband, picking up the pieces of shattered dreams; hopes of a young, happy family, and drawing on her inner strength to believe and rebuild her life.
