Preface
In 1988 a meeting of the Joint Commission on Soviet and American Theatre and Drama was held in Moscow, sponsored by the American Council of Learned Societies and the Union of Theatre Workers of the USSR. The ostensible theme of the meeting was the state of the art, an exchange of information on current methods and concerns of theatre research. It soon became apparent that, among the Soviet scholars, there was a compelling desire to take advantage of the climate of glasnost' to examine Russian emigr theatre.
During the previous decades many of the Russian theatre artists who had emigrated had become "nonpersons" in their native land. Their careers abroad were known only in the vaguest way; often it was unknown whether or not they were still alive. Travel restrictions and implicit balls on research into certain subjects had kept foreign archives sealed to Soviet scholars.
