PREFACE BOOKS

Generat Editor: JOHN PURKIS

A description of what, the Preface Books were intended to be was included in the first volume and has appeared unchanged at the front of every succeeding title: A series of scholary and critical studies of major writers intended for those needing modern and authoritative guidance through the characteristic difficulties of their work to reach an intelligent understanding and enjoyment, of it. This may seem modest enough but a moments reflection will reveal what a considerable claim it actually is. It is much to the credit of Longman and to their (founding) editor Maurice Hussey and his authors that these words have come to seem no more than a plain statement of fact.

Contents

Unless otherwise specified, quotations from Greenes novels are taken from the British first editions listed in the bibliography. Frequently, they differ significantly in punctuation and phrasing from the US first editions and some later editions. For example, the first US edition of Brighton Rock (published by Viking) has a character called Drewitt and lacks some of the Jewish allusions of the first British edition (Heinemann); and that Viking hardback version is the ancestor of the Viking, early Penguin and Bantam paperbacks. The Heinemann version (in which that character is called Prewitt) is the ancestor of the British Uniform and Library editions. For the Collected Edition (Heinemann and Bodley Head, 1970), Greene revised the text; among many other changes, he removed various Jewish allusions. Later Penguin texts follow the Collected Edition text.

Quotations from the tales are taken from Collected Stories (London: Bodley Head and Heinemann, 1972) or, in the case of tales not included in Collected Stories, from the first British collections in which the items appeared. Quotations from the essays are from Collected Essays (London: Bodley Head, 1969) unless otherwise indicated. Quotations from the plays are from the editions listed in the bibliography.

In any quotation, a row of three points () indicates an ellipsis already present in the cited text, whereas a row of five points indicates an omission I have made. I have corrected the accentuation of some foreign names. Any other changes to quotations are enclosed in square brackets.

During the preparation of this book, I was greatly helped by Norman Sherrys The Life of Graham Greene, Vols I and II. Michael Sheldens Graham Greene: The Man Within was also useful. For advice on various details, I am indebted to Professors David Leon Higdon, John Rhl, Michael Shelden, Norman Sherry and Norman Vance. Professor Hugh Drake deserves my particular gratitude for his extensive help, advice and encouragement.
