Ivanka Trump, international businesswoman and role model
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction to Ivanka Trump
I n business, as in life, nothing is ever handed to you. That might sound like a line coming from someone with a backstory like mineand a load!but if you know me and my family, youll understand that I come by these words honestly.
By the age of twenty-eight, Ivanka Trump was not only a major force in her fathers widely recognized New York City development business, she was a published author of her first book, The Trump Card: Playing to Work and Life. She was born in Manhattan on October 30, 1981, the daughter of Donald Trump and Ivana Zelnickova. Her parents were among the United States most recognizable celebrities for decades, initially as one of the glamorous power couples in the eighties, then for their highly publicized divorce, then their books written about deal making and forging ones purpose. Ivanka herself has been a public figure since she was a young girl out with her parents; as a model; as one of New York Citys elite, affluent kids featured in the HBO documentaryBorn Rich; and more recently for her role as vice president of development and acquisitions for the Trump Organization, while also launching her own designer goods line, Ivanka Trump, and publishing two books.
Ivankas earliest education came from watching her parents build their lives and fame in the international world of New York City. Her formal education started at the prestigious Chapin School in Manhattan, famous for alumni like Jackie Kennedy and Queen Noor of Jordan. As a teenager, she then transferred to the Choate Rosemary Hall boarding school in Connecticut. During her time there, a rebellious Ivanka wanted to get her navel pierced with friends, but her father called to check in on her minutes before she could go through with itan early sign of the influence of her father in her life. After graduation, she attended Georgetown University for two years before leaving and finishing cum laude with her bachelors in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where her father had also attended. She grew up in the family business, her grandfathers real-estate and construction firm, and dreamt from the time she was a young girl of one day joining her fathers business. Both of her parents developed reputations for being remarkably goal driven and energetic, raising her to see herself as responsible for upholding the family name.
Always devoted to her father, Ivanka became even closer with him after her parents divorce.
The Trump Legacy
Ivanka is the fourth-generation Trump to develop business in real estate. Her great-grandfather was a German immigrant who made his fortune in Seattle during the Klondike gold rush as a hotel and saloon keeper who provided goods and services to miners. He later opened up a real-estate storefront in Queens, New York. Her grandfather made his fortune during New Deal government incentives programs to build public housing developments in Brooklyn and Queens. In order to distinguish himself from his father, Fred Jr., Donald Trump, Ivankas father, set his sights on Manhattan during an economic slump, intent on bringing New York City back into its next period of grandeur. After two years enrolled at Fordham, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvanias business school, the Wharton School, because it had one of the few real-estate departments in the country and had been selected by his older brother. A fellow developer would say about him as a young man, He seemed like an epic character, straight out of Stendhal. An ambitious boy from the provinces, full of his own ego, wanting to make his way in the city.
The young Donald Trump built a reputation of being the most focused and most competitive player on the block, driven to become famous. He built the Grand Hyatt above Grand Central Terminal, Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue between Fifty-Sixth and Fifty-Seventh Streets (made famous for his purchase of Tiffany & Co.s flagship stores air rights so that he could build it fifty-eight stories high), and Trump World Tower at 845 United Nations Plaza. Ivankas bedroom growing up was on the top floor of the Trump Tower; she remembers it standing out to her that when she went to boarding school, it wasnt the Trump name that was emblazoned on the side of her dorm. In 1987, her father published Trump: The Art of the Deal, describing the tenets of his entrepreneurial strategies, cowritten with Tony Schwartz, a New York journalist.
In her own book The Trump Card, Ivanka writes that her father expected his children to not just meet, but exceed, his high expectations for them. As a result, she wanted to be more than competent, more than just good enough. She strove to be superb. Ivanka would later report that one of her first major successes was flying home after making a deal and hearing her father proclaim it to be the best hed ever seen.
Ivanka and Her Mother
Ivanka Trumps mother, Ivana, was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. Growing up, Ivanas family was self-reliant and resourceful. They made, grew, or processed their own food. She remembers being astounded by the abundance and variety of fresh food available on the other side of the
