Dianas Family
- Dianas father was Edward John, the 8 th Earl Spencer.
- The Spencer family is an aristocratic one, descended from the royal line of the Stuarts.
- Diana was given the title Lady Diana Spencer when her father became the eighth Earl (after the death of his own father, Albert, the seventh Earl).
- Her mother was called Frances.
- Diana was the youngest of the Spencers daughters and had four siblings - Sarah, Jane, John and Charles, although John had died as an infant a year before she was born.
- Sadly, when she was just fourteen, Dianas parents fell out and went through an acrimonious divorce. Custody of Diana was awarded to her father, although for a few months she had lived with her mother in London.
- After the divorce, in 1976, Dianas father re-married Raine McCorquodale, the daughter of famous romantic novelist Barbara Cartland.
- The eighth Earl Spencer died in 1992, and by this point Raine had fallen out with her stepson, Dianas older brother Charles. He asked Raine to leave the family home - which she did, albeit cushioned with a 4m payout.

- Diana was distant cousins with some pretty well-known names including Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. She was also related to wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill and an incredible eight US presidents including George Washington!
Growing Up
- Initially, as a very young girl, Diana was home-schooled - as many children of her class were at the time. However as a teenager she attended Riddlesworth Hall, and later went to a boarding school called The New School at West Heath.
- Diana was not a very bright pupil, and was regarded as a poor student. She took her O level exams twice and failed every single one of them - however teachers agreed she was very good at playing the piano.
- As a child and teenager, Diana was known to be quite shy, perhaps due to her parents unhappy marriage and her perception of being unloved. It was known at the time that her father had been hoping for a male heir, and this was a source of many of her parents arguments. Psychologically, it could have been that Diana blamed herself for the disharmony.
- Despite this shyness, Diana came into her element when she was dancing or playing music - these were the true signs of her vibrant personality that years later would endear her to the public.
- After attending the Institut Alpin Videmanette finishing school in Switzerland (during which period she first met her future husband Charles), Diana moved to London.
- Diana was desperate to become a professional ballet dancer, however her hopes were dashed when she grew too tall.
- At the age of 17, Diana began her first job - as a nanny for the daughter of Major Jeremy and Phillipa Whittaker; Phillipas brother was a close friend of hers.
- For her 18 th birthday Diana was given a flat in London, where she lived for the next few years along with three housemates.
- Next up Diana tried cooking, but despite taking an advanced course she did not become a particularly good chef. She put her hand to being a dance instructor, but this was also a career option closed to her after she suffered a bad skiing accident.
- Diana eventually decided on a career in childcare, and worked at a nursery, although she did also do some cleaning work for her sister and act as a hostess at society parties.
Prince Charles
- Before dating Diana, Charles had been in a relationship her older sister Sarah - in fact, this is how the two met!
