The Boy in the Song: The Real Stories Behind 50 Classic Pop Songs: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Boy in the Song: The Real Stories Behind 50 Classic Pop Songs" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The Boy in the Song is a follow up to 2010s The Girl in the Song. It features the real-life stories that inspired some classic pop songs about the male of the species. While the first book was filled with songs about unrequited love, the follow-up is more varied, with songs written from a number of emotions. There are songs motivated by love and hate, there are tributes and there are biographical tales. Each song is featured on two, four or six pages with a small biography of the artist along with the story of how and why the song was written, and, most intriguingly, what happened after the song became a hit.

George Michael

A s part of British pop duo Wham! in the 1980s, George Michael adorned the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls across Britain. But continuing questions about his sexuality were answered when police caught him performing a lewd act in a Los Angeles park toilet in 1998. The scandal confirmed Michaels sexuality in the most public of ways.

Two years before the incident in the summer of 1996 Michael had begun dating US businessman Kenny Goss. The pair were together at the time of the police sting, but such was the nature of their relationship that the scandal caused more of a stir among the worlds media than it did between George and Kenny. Goss remembered the moment in an interview with US talk-show host Oprah Winfrey: He called me and said, You are not going to believe what Ive done. Got a DUI [Driving Under the Influence]? He goes, If only

George often praised Kenny for his understanding of his flamboyant nature and that tolerance helped strengthen their relationship over the years. Weve had our problems but hes never had a problem with my lifestyle, was Georges take on it. Kennys lenience and acceptance is displayed in Amazing, Georges tribute to his boyfriend, where he sings:

You tried to save me from myself

Said Darling, kiss as many as you want!

His appreciation of Goss perhaps reflects the fact that they met when George was at his lowest after losing his mother to cancer. Georges feelings are reflected in the songs opening lyrics: I was mixed up when you came to me, too broke to fix.

The glowing acknowledgment of his partner was released in 2004 after the dust surrounding the 1998 scandal had long since settled. Amazing soared to the Top 5 in the UK as fans showed their approval of the dance-influenced number. The album it came from, Patience, performed even better, topping the UK charts and hitting #12 in the US Billboard 200.

Sadly, George announced from the stage at the start of his Symphonica tour at the State Opera House in Prague in August 2011 that he was no longer with his long-term partner. In truth, Kenny and I have not been together for two and a half years, he told fans, his voice breaking with emotion. He said he was sorry for any pain he had caused his former partner, adding he thought it was better to be honest about the real situation: This man has brought me a lot of joy and a lot of pain. The truth is my love life has been a lot more turbulent than Ive let on Im so sad about my relationship with Kenny, he added.

He then introduced a new track, Where I Hope You Are, which had been inspired by the split.

GEORGE MICHAEL, of Greek-Cypriot heritage, was born Giorgios Panayiotou in London in 1963. He emerged from teen duo Wham! in the mid 1980s and went on to conquer the American market in 1987 with his first solo album Faith. A battle with record label Sony raged until 1995, clearing the way for the introspective album Older.

In 2006 Michael started his first tour in 15 years, performing in 41 countries to two million fans. The last years of the decade were more notable for run-ins with the law over soft and prescription drug use, but he maintained his public profile through use of the social medium of Twitter.

P op artist and commercial illustrator Andy Warhol founded his legendary New York studio, the Factory, in 1962. It soon became the inplace for artists, musicians, and bohemians to hang out. By 1965, Warhol had turned his attention to moviemaking and music. The Velvet Underground, led by Lou Reed, entered his orbit via an associate. He became their manager and, in return for funding the band, Warhol insisted that one of his protgs, German model Nico, join as additional vocalist. The band toured America as part of Warhols Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a multimedia extravaganza also featuring dancing, film, and performance art.

Reed acknowledged Warhols pivotal role in the Velvet Undergrounds early career. We were doing our shows and we werent even making enough to put the show on next day and Andy would go and do commercial art things constantly just to get the money together to put on the show. Thats how we stayed together. It was all down to Andy.

Nominally, Warhol produced their first album The Velvet Underground and Nico, and designed the famous banana cover. Toward the end of 1967, when Warhol had seemingly lost interest in the band, Reed ousted him as manager.

On June 3, 1968, Warhol was shot at the Factory by the radical feminist Valerie Solanas, a small player in the Factory scene who suffered from the delusion that Warhol was controlling her and that to free herself she must kill him. The artist suffered life-threatening injuries to his chest and, although he recovered, the assassination attempt left physical and mental scars. Before I was shot, I always thought that I was more half-there than all-thereI always suspected that I was watching TV instead of living life. People sometimes say that the way things happen in movies is unreal, but actually its the way things happen in life thats unreal. The movies make emotions look so strong and real, whereas when things really do happen to you its like watching televisionyou dont feel anything. Right when I was being shot and ever since, I knew that I was watching television. The channels switch, but its all television.

Despite Warhols firing, Reed wrote Andys Chest shortly afterward as a goodwill message to Warhol. Its what I thought about Andy being shot, said Reed. Its about that, even though the lyrics dont sound like it. He also claimed that Its a love song. The original 1968 Velvet Underground version was not released until 1985 on VU, a collection of outtakes. Reed refashioned Andys Chest for his 1972 album Transformer, produced by David Bowie and guitarist Mick Ronson.

Warhol died after a gall bladder operation in 1987. As well as coining the aphorism in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes, Warhol is part of an elite group of artists whose work has sold for $100 million. His screen prints of a Campbells soup can and Marilyn Monroe are among the best known artworks of the twentieth century.

LOU REED was the principal songwriter of the Velvet Underground, one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Reeds second album, Transformer, made him a household name with the hit single Walk on the Wild Side, which, like Andys Chest and much of the material on the album, was inspired by Warhols Factory.
