The video montage of Selenas work on television, in movies, and in music, was extensive for a young woman of twenty-two. As her many accomplishments were splashed across the monitors, Selena knew she wasnt the only one who deserved accolades. Tonight it wasnt her contributions Selena wanted to acknowledgeit was her mothers. I want to thank my mom so much because shes the greatest human being in the world and shes strong and shes given up her life for me and shes so beautiful, Gomez said. I want all of you to love your mom and give her everything because shes incredible.

That night Selena joined the ranks of past winners that have included Ashton Kutcher, Kristen Stewart, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears. At twenty-two, she was the youngest to ever receive the honor.

In addition to her mother, she wanted to thank her fans. I have to be honest, especially this month, I cannot thank you guys enough. You remind me amidst all the stuff that we deal with personally, you remind me of whats important. Thats giving and loving and caring about each other, Selena said. Im not trying to preach, but you guys make me better.

Perhaps she was referring to a tumultuous year of both professional highs as well as some very personal lows centering around on her on again-off again relationship with fellow pop star, Justin Bieber.

Rough Start

The year had started on a sour note when on January 5, 2014 Selena checked into The Meadows, a psychiatric facility for the treatment of trauma and addiction in Arizona. Her representative at the time said it was a voluntary stay that did not involve any substance abuse issues.

In a statement to her fans Selena addressed the issue personally. My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them. But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be. To my fans, I sincerely apologize and I hope you guys know how much each and every one of you means to me.

After canceling over a dozen tour dates, she was back to work on March 29, just in time to attend the 2014 Kids Choice Awards held at the University of Southern California Galen Center in Los Angeles. Selena was lucky enough not to get slimed and even luckier to win the award for Favorite Female Singer, triumphing over Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and her good friend Taylor Swift.

Selena was also presented with the coveted Fan Army Award, which was a direct result of her massive fan baseknown as The Selenators. The competition pinned her fans against other celebrity fan groups: The Arianators (Ariana Grande), The Directioners (One Direction), and the JT Superfans (Justin Timberlake). Fans had to compete in daily trials on social media to win, and Selenas fans came out on top.

Modern Familys Sarah Hyland hosted the Teen Choice Awards and presented Gomez with her Ultimate Award.

Speaking to her fans as she accepted her award, Selena recognized their continued support. I just have to say that you guys have been the most loyal, dedicated people in my life, she said, because you continuously, every year, bless me with the opportunity to do what I love, so thank you so much. You guys are awesome, and this is for you. So, thank you.

The evening also created a stir on social media, when Selena was spotted wearing a gold band on her left hand. Speculation was rampant that Justin Bieber has proposed. But in truth, things with Justin were not going well. Rumors of Biebers infidelity swirled as photos emerged of him spending time with other women in Canada that week. Just a few days prior to the Kids Choice Awards, Selena was approached by a person who handed her a subpoena to testify in a lawsuit against Bieber by a paparazzi who claimed he was physically attacked by the superstar in May 2012 while trying to photograph Bieber and Gomez at a California shopping center.
