T HIS BOOK would not have been possible without the help of a great many people. Oliver Holmes answered my persistent questions about his family history with infinite patience, and John Laxton similarly responded to my requests for information and photos. Former employees Peter Andrews and Jacqueline Revitt spoke freely and with great affection about their days at Merrythought, and Pat Rush was generous with her extensive knowledge and resources relating to the companys history. Merrythought enthusiasts Jill Byron and Angela Popay supplied images, as did expert teddy restorer Dot Bird who also gave me invaluable assistance in the chapter relating to recognising old Merrythought bears. For further images, I am grateful to the unfailing generosity of several specialist old bear dealers including Daniel Agnew, Bourton Bears, Leanda Harwood and All You Can Bear, as well as Lorna Kaufman of Vectis Auctions who never once grumbled when I repeatedly asked her for just one more image. Sue and Malcolm Brewer also helped enormously with images, as did Laura Sinanovitch of the Puppenhausmuseum in Basel and Ian Pout of Teddy Bears of Witney.
For information relating to Clifton Rendles military record, I am grateful to Mike Motum (RIFLES Secretary) and Richard Kemp of the Somerset Military Museum Trust. I must also give thanks to Barry Edwards at Merrythought, Yuri Shimpo at Archives of Ontario, Michele Pacheco at Sears Canada Inc., and Jan Johnstone whose ability to ferret out useful information is second to none. Finally, my unfailing love and gratitude go to my husband Alastair and daughter Amy who uncomplainingly bore the brunt of my Merrythought obsession.
Essential Merrythought Directory
I F THIS book has fired your enthusiasm for Merrythought teddy bears, you may be keen to start collecting. Thats great but its best not to buy anything until youve done some homework.
For knowledge and experience of old bears, nothing beats looking at and, wherever possible, holding and examining them. Museums can be excellent places to view old teddies but their disadvantage is that since the exhibits are behind glass, you cant get hold of them and give them a thoroughly good examination. Luckily, auction viewings offer unlimited opportunities for close, hands-on inspection, and as long as you ask politely and are careful, dealers specialising in vintage bears will usually be happy to let you handle their stock. Many of these dealers exhibit at teddy bear fairs held up and down the country. Its worth getting to know the dealers, firstly because they have masses of useful information about different types of bear, and secondly because if you give them your contact details, theyll keep you informed of any interesting Merrythoughts they get in. Most dealers also operate excellent websites so once you know and trust them, you can spend many happy hours browsing online. While buying old bears online from an unknown source is not the best idea, if the website belongs to someone you know to be reputable, online shopping gives you the chance to hunt for desirable old bears whenever you want and from the comfort of your home.
The following listings include details of old bear dealers, teddy bear fairs, expert restoration, shops selling modern Merrythought bears, museums, auctioneers and useful publications. The list is by no means definitive as there are literally dozens of other reputable names that could have been included but this should help get you started. Happy hunting!
