The published materials, under these marks, represent the views of the author. A BioView story is a scripted virtual interview based on research about a persons life and times. As in any story, the words indicate only an interpretation of what the individuals mentioned in the BioViews could have said.
While the interpretations are based on available research, they do not purport to represent the actual views of the people mentioned. The interpretations are made in good faith, recognizing that other interpretations could be made. The inverted commas used in the BioViews give an indication of possible dialogue in the context of the story. The author and publisher disclaim any responsibility from action that readers take on the BioViews for educational or other purposes. Any use of the BioView materials is the responsibility of the reader and should be supported by their independent research. We recognize there are different conventions on the spelling of words in what we shall call British English and American English.
Within our titles, we have chosen to adopt the spelling style the featured individuals would have used to ensure the BioViews are as authentic as possible. ISBN 978-1-921752-91-9
The Author
Dr Charles Margerison is a Chartered Psychologist, a member of the Royal Institution and the Royal Society of Literature. He is Chairman of Viewpoint Resources Ltd, a publishing organization, and the founder of The Amazing People Club. Previously, he was Professor of Management at the University of Cranfield, UK, and also at the University of Queensland, Australia. He is the co-founder of Team Management Systems and the Chairman of Bell Hughes Music Group. The author of more than ten books on management issues, Dr Margerison has also written an innovative continuing professional development system, called
The Communication and Problem Solving Resource.
This provides educational support resources for the use of the Amazing People Club series in schools and colleges. The Amazing People Club series commenced when Dr Margerison wondered what people like William Shakespeare, Marie Curie, Abraham Lincoln, and other great achievers would have said if he had interviewed them about their life and work. He decided to research the known facts about their lives and write up what he thought they would say. In particular, he focused on the psychological issues associated with their personalities and how they used their time and talents well in order to achieve. The stories give us an insight into their motivation and relationships with other people. This unique range of stories is presented via a new concept called BioViews that combines a biography with a virtual interview.
The stories are an interpretation of the lives of amazing people, as in a theatre play. Each one is presented as if the person is talking to you personally. There are no full stops, as in traditional writing, except at the end. The intention is to create the flow of conversation. BioViews offer new and interesting ways of understanding major contributions to our world by amazing people.

Introduction
Music can light up our lives in different ways.
Are you a person who prefers blues music or opera? Do you gravitate more to a rock concert or a jazz session? Would you go to a ballet or a musical? Maybe you are eclectic and prefer all forms of music. Where do the various forms of music sit on your scale of preferences? Do you listen to Bach, the Beatles and Beethoven? Do you like Mozarts music? Where do Pavarotti, Elvis Presley and Louis Armstrong fit in with your choices? The lives of these and other amazing musicians are all reflected in this book. I discovered my main preferences in music when I was about 34 years of age. It was then that I decided to buy a keyboard and take lessons. That focused my mind on the kinds of music that I enjoyed playing. In the main, I played ballads, swing music, some country songs, plus Latin and waltz music.
In due course, I started to write lyrics and put them to music. I began working with recording artists who sang in a range of styles. Eventually, I became the President of a publishing company called the Bell Hughes Music Group. My interest and preferences in music influenced the choice of those I decided to interview. This book reflects on the lives of people who had a major influence on music styles both during their lifetime and afterwards. Each of the stories is presented in what I call the BioView form.
This is a new concept that describes a virtual biographical interview. In each case, I have imagined what the amazing musicians would say if they were interviewed today. In this way, I have tried to capture their feelings on issues they faced in their lives. Each of the BioViews has also been recorded in an audio form, so you can listen to actors representing the amazing musicians. I have chosen people from different eras and different genres. Each has a fascinating story to tell.
I trust that you will find each one interesting, as they all provide insights into how these amazing musicians developed their amazing music. Charles Margerison

What a Wonderful World That became a major hit song for me Reflective of my life in many ways However, it did not start out that way My early life was not all that wonderful As the grandson of slaves, there was no golden spoon Although baptized in the Catholic Church, there were few blessings Maybe my parents did not tell the priest that I was born illegitimate The same for my sister, born three years later Then, my father left us and times got tougher Mother found it hard to cope and looked for other boyfriends She left me and my sister with our grandparents Grandma Josephine stood by us, until I was five Mother then returned and we went to live with her The only time I saw Father was in marching parades By that time, he was living with another woman Money was short in our house so I took on odd jobs One of them was delivering papers and another was doing errands New Orleans, my home town, was a hard place The law of the street gangs prevailed Joining a gang was necessary for personal protection We guarded our territory and those who paid us Particularly, in and around the bars and music clubs As a young member, running errands, I learnt what was required While visiting the clubs, it gave me the chance to listen to the music Especially ragtime music, that was very popular Joining a quartet of young boys helped me gain an income We sang on street corners Our popular music attracted attention Some people said that I had a good voice With an ear for music, I wanted to play an instrument The sound made by a cornet was one that I liked Players in the clubs showed me the basics Soon, I was able to play basic tunes But, I continued with my temporary jobs One was for the Karnofskys, a Jewish family from Russia They had a junk hauling business One day, Mr Karnofsky asked where I was living On hearing that I had no proper home, he invited me to stay It was an act of generosity that I never forgot Mr K., as I called him, was very kind to me in many ways I never forgot that Throughout my life, I wore a Star of David pendant It was a mark of respect Mr K. also gave me a loan to buy a cornet
