Dr Charles Margerison is a Chartered Psychologist, a member of the Royal Institution and the Royal Society of Literature. He is Chairman of Viewpoint Resources Ltd, a publishing organization, and the founder of The Amazing People Club. Previously, he was Professor of Management at the University of Cranfield, UK, and also at the University of Queensland, Australia. He is the co-founder of Team Management Systems and the Chairman of Bell Hughes Music Group. The author of more than ten books on management issues, Dr Margerison has also written an innovative continuing professional development system, called The Communication and Problem Solving Resource.

This provides educational support resources for the use of the Amazing People Club series in schools and colleges. The Amazing People Club series commenced when Dr Margerison wondered what people like William Shakespeare, Marie Curie, Abraham Lincoln, and other great achievers would have said if he had interviewed them about their life and work. He decided to research the known facts about their lives and write up what he thought they would say. In particular, he focused on the psychological issues associated with their personalities and how they used their time and talents well in order to achieve. The stories give us an insight into their motivation and relationships with other people. This unique range of stories is presented via a new concept called BioViews that combines a biography with a virtual interview.

The stories are an interpretation of the lives of amazing people, as in a theatre play. Each one is presented as if the person is talking to you personally. There are no full stops, as in traditional writing, except at the end. The intention is to create the flow of conversation. BioViews offer new and interesting ways of understanding major contributions to our world by amazing people.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder is a saying that has been around a long time.
Introduction
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder is a saying that has been around a long time.

It seeks to explain not only what people like in the form of art or design, but also in relationships. Our inner world of what we like determines what we try to find in love. In choosing our friends and partners, we look for people who are attractive to us in some way. They may be knowledgeable, skilled or they may look beautiful to us, but not to others. We put a value on what we see and hear. What one person sees as attractive in another is a source of fascination.

Magazines and news are full of such stories. There are many poems, plays and songs that try to understand the many aspects of what we call love. Some say that love is not a matter for the head, but a matter for the heart. Another view is that love is part of the survival process as mentioned by Charles Darwin in his great work. Love stories emerge for different reasons. Why, for example, did Anne Hathaway marry William Shakespeare and Napoleon marry Josephine? In contrast, why did many women agree to become mistresses, rather than press for marriage before agreeing to a long-term relationship? Madame de Pompadours long term relationship with King Louis XV is one example amongst many.

Instead of trying to analyse the issues in psychoanalytical form, another approach has been used. It is called a BioView. This is a combination of a biography and an interview where people travel through time to tell their story. The stories are based on the interpretation of known facts. For example, what would Anne Burras, the first mother in the American State of Virginia, have said about her relationship with John Leydon? How would Sally Hemings, a slave girl, describe her relationship with the President of America? Why did Marina Gamba have three children with Galileo, even though he refused to marry her? In return, how would the men have described the relationships? I have tried to represent the two points of view in a number of the stories. 1650

Some days can change your life In June 1608, that happened to me I was working as a servant, for Margaret Forrest She ran into the dining room where I was cleaning Out of breath, she said, Anne, I have received a letter My husband has asked me to join him, at his new place of work I want you to come with me, as my maidservant Where are we going? I asked Jamestown, Virginia, my mistress replied Where in England is that? I enquired It is not in this country, she said with a smile We have to go across the Atlantic Ocean I was not told much more, until we boarded the boat My mistress, Margaret Forrest, was married to a colonial settler As she was moving, I had to follow or lose my job It was not for me to question, so I packed the bags Mrs Forrest told me to include all her dresses and silverware So, I guessed that we would be away for a long time As her maid, it was my duty to have things ready I did not have the option of returning home My parents had died when I was young Therefore, as soon as possible, I took a job in service Never did I think it would mean leaving England Within a few weeks, we were on our way to the port We boarded a boat with big beautiful sails blowing in the breeze It was the first time that I had left dry land The next day, we cast off from the shore and departed At the age of 14, I was sailing across a huge ocean Excited, but also rather concerned Wondering if I would survive the great waves Not sure if I would like Jamestown, Virginia - wherever it was Would I ever see England again? Our accommodation was a small cabin that was damp and smelly My mistress and I were the only two females on board There were over 60 sailors, including my brother John He had enlisted when I told him where I was going Most others were rough types Some tried to get me to spend time alone with them My mistress told them to keep their distance Once away from land, I felt ill I feared for my life, as we sailed from one storm to another Each day became more difficult Our clothes were always wet from the mist and rain Mrs Forrest started to cough, and found it hard to eat Although I tried to feed her, she became weaker Prayers were offered for her health and our safety
