On 20 June 1994, a gunman opened fire inside the busy hospital of Fairchild Air Force Base. Four days later, the crash of a B-52 bomber killed some of Fairchilds most veteran aviators. The twin tragedies struck suddenly but not without warning.
This nonfiction narrative is a page turner... you will not put it down. CMSgt William Kelly, USAF, Office of Special Investigations
Warnings Unheeded is the work of criminal investigator Andy Brown. As a young military policeman, Brown saved countless lives when he raced to the hospital and ended the gunmans shooting spree. His devotion to duty prepared him for the deadly gunfight, but he wasnt prepared for the traumatic effect of learning that twenty-six people had been gunned down prior to his arrival, or for the loss of four aviators later that week.
On a quest for answers, Brown spent two decades investigating the events that led to the mass murder and the plane crash. His relentless research uncovered numerous people who had warned of the impending violence and disaster. With heavy use of firsthand accounts, Warnings Unheeded lets us experience the unfolding tragedies through the eyes of the men and women who struggled to prevent them. From the people who tried to help a troubled airman even as he plotted to kill them. From the aviators who were forced to fly with a seemingly-suicidal pilot. And from a military policeman who offers a candid insight into the hidden cost of becoming a hero.
Warnings Unheeded is a story of heroes and humanity of violence and mental illness and if we are willing to listen, a timeless warning from the ghosts of our past.
Best book Ive read in some time. Without lurid details or overwrought prose ... [Brown] illustrates the events leading up to the twin tragedies with a thoroughness and professionalism I suspect he brings to every task he takes on. But this is no dry recounting of facts, and Browns compassion for the victims is as clear as his prose ... I highly recommend this book. R. Jenson, Gray Dog Press
In vivid and thoroughly researched detail, Andy Brown masterfully weaves two tragic stories ... this is an important and well-written read. Gregory K. Moffatt, Ph.D., Author of Blind-Sided: Homicide Where it is Least Expected
A highly readable book ... from a unique source. Recommended for a wide audience. Best-selling true-crime author, Ron Franscell

An amazing book An instant classic Staff Sergeant Brown is a true guardian - photo 1

An amazing book. An instant classic. Staff Sergeant Brown is a true guardian who saved countless lives with supernatural marksmanship skill in a moment of great need, but he has also proven himself to be a true warrior-wordsmith who will save even more lives, as the lessons from this book are learned and applied in our current violent times. Absolutely required reading for law enforcement and mental health professionals, but also profoundly valuable for anyone who wants to understand violence and mental illness in our society today.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (USA, ret.), author of On Combat, On Killing, and Assassination Generation

In vivid and thoroughly researched detail, Andy Brown masterfully weaves two tragic stories that display how interventions were thwarted and clear warning signs of danger were overlooked due to politics and military pressures. In parallel accounts he craftily weds the stories of the vivid dysfunction of a troubled young airman and the reckless arrogance of a senior officer and aviator. As Andy Brown clearly displays, if warnings had been heeded, the behavior of both men would not have led to disastrous ends. Disturbing as these stories are, this is an important and well-written read.

Gregory K. Moffatt, Ph.D., author of Blind-Sided: Homicide Where it is Least Expected and A Violent Heart

The compelling true story of a law enforcement officer who kills a mass murderer and then meticulously digs out the twisted circumstances that brought them together that fateful day. Rich in fascinating detail and page-turning narration, Warnings Unheeded delivers memorable insights into the kind of slaughter that so often fills news cycles these days, and the resilience heroes need to fight back from the emotional toll of protecting other lives.

Charles Remsberg, author of the Street Survival book series for police

Authors Note

This narrative nonfiction book was written using reports of investigation, witness statements, medical records, personal interviews, newspaper articles, recorded law enforcement and fire department radio transmissions and the letters and journals of the people involved.

I read hundreds of statements written by witnesses to the events depicted in this book. As in many high-stress incidents, the perceptions and observations of eye witnesses can differ. On the rare occasion where I encountered differing witness accounts, I went with the majority consensus.

These stories are told using the words of those who lived and died during the events. Some quotes have been corrected for minor errors in spelling and grammar, but the spirit of the text remains unchanged.
