SEARCHING for FAMILY and TRADITIONS
at the FRENCH TABLE
For those of us who love France and also who have a deep respect and interest in the tales of the older generations, this book is a real gem. Carole and Josiane are invited into many households on their travels, and they provide wonderful snapshots of the families, their history, and that of the regions. The book is overflowing with descriptions of the wonderful regional produce and tales of times gone by.... The author has generously ended the book with a collection of some of the wonderful recipes for us to enjoy making in our kitchens, whilst embracing the flavors and traditions of French family life.... I would highly recommend this excellent book, and I am sure it will be enjoyed by anyone loving France, cooking, traditions, and history. A French culinary extravaganza!

French Book Worm, on Good Life France.com
These are stories of history and change, of cherishing traditions partly because of the sense that they may not continue forever, making them even more precious and Bumpuss recording of them even more vital....

Deborah Lawrenson, author of
The Lantern and 300 Days of Sun
If you love all things French or just a good travelogue with a culinary angle, Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table, Book One is for you. This wonderfully written culinary and travel memoir, the first in a planned series, combines a love for French culture and food with the personal reflections and stories of families the author meets during a road trip through Paris and three other regions.... Bumpus gives us a very personal glimpse into the people, places, and food of four regions of France. The narrative is engaging, highly descriptive, entertaining, warm-hearted, sometimes funny, and often touching. Her curiosity about what holds European families together reveals levels of the human experience that may focus on the culinary connections but goes far beyond a familys kitchen table. Highly recommended.

Book Two
I dedicate this book to my husband, Winston Bumpus, who has supported my love of culinary travels, my lust for discovering a good story, and my desire to share these stories with the world. My Book Sherpa, Extraordinaire! And to my son, Andrew Smith, who, along with my husband, has listened to me, helped me with recipe testing, and encouraged me at every turn. Both have their own stories waiting to be revealed, but in the meantime, they have supported my dream.
And, to my dear friend, Josiane Selvage, who took me by the hand and continued to lead me on this most incredible edible journey! As she says, We need to take more trips soon, so I dont have to rely on my own diaries. My life, and the lives of my family since Josiane, have never been the same. And we are all better people because of it.
I am more modest now, but I still think that one of the pleasantest of all emotions is to know that I, I with my brain and my hands, have nourished my beloved few, that I have concocted a stew or a story, a rarity or a plain dish, to sustain them truly against the hungers of the world.
