BATTLEFIELD GUIDEBOOKS
There are still few English-language guides to the Battle of Verdun. The Michelin Guide, Verdun and the Battles for its Possession , first produced in 1919 and reprinted in 1994 by G.H. Smith & Sons, Easingwold, York, England, is interesting but has little detail. Verdun and the wider area are covered by Major and Mrs Holts guide to The Western Front South, published by Pen & Sword Books, UK, and by A historical tour of Verdun by Jean-Pascal Soudagne and Remi Villagi, published by Editions Ouest-France in three languages. My two previous books, Verdun Fort Douaumont and Walking Verdun , both published by Pen & Sword Books, UK, offer detailed information about the most important fort in the Verdun system and provide a general walkers guide to the battlefield.
Visitors who read French will find much interesting information about Verdun in Premire Guerre Mondiale des Flandres lAlsace , published by Editions Casterman in 1996. Although out of print, it is worth looking for a second-hand copy of this book, as it deals with the political background to the war and the leading personalities as well as covering the fighting on the Western Front as a whole. Relevant German publications include the Militrgeschichtlicher Reisefhrer, Verdun, by Horst Rohde and Robert Ostrovsky (Verlag E.S. Mittler & Sohn, Hamburg, Berlin, Bonn) and Spurensuche bei Verdun: Ein Fhrer ber die Schlachtfelder by Kurt Fischer and Stephan Klink (Bonn, Bernard & Graefe Verlag, 2000).
An excellent recent publication, which contains an extensive section on Verdun and the surrounding area, is Militrgeschichtlicher Reisefhrer zu den Schlachtfeldern des Ersten Weltkrieges: Lothringen und Elsass by Markus Klauer (2009), ISBN 3-9807648-4-2, www.weltkriegesbuch.de
