PREFACE
In 1996, In A Post-Soviet and seemingly post-Tolstoy Russia, the Vagrius Press ventured a sequel to the great novelist's War and Peace, drawing heavy fire from the critics and the avid interest of readers.1 The novel's personalized title, Pierre and Natasha, recalls Scarlett, the sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. In both instances, publishers presumed that the general reader is ultimately more taken with character than concept. But the Russian sequel entailed taking a steeper step down the ladder of artistic value.
