Preface
Why study World War II in Louisiana? For me, the answer lies in my longstanding interest in the recent history of my native state. Louisiana's history is a fascinating story from its beginning as a French colony in 1699, but I find its twentieth-century history especially interesting. Few other states have experienced the same level of political interest and political misconduct as Louisiana, but the state also occasionally produces politicians who sincerely try to provide honest, efficient government. The state's culture is likewise unique and compelling. Even today, it reflects deep cleavage between the north, with its more typical "southern" ways, and the south, with its distinctive Latin heritage.
The World War II years are essential to an understanding of modern Louisiana. Huey P. Long established the foundation upon which much of the modern state is built, but the post-Long years 19391945 also brought important developments in the state. Anti-Longite politicians proved during the administrations of Sam Jones and Jimmie Davis that they also could govern the state. And Louisiana's society and economics began to develop modern characteristics during those years.
Finally, World War II brought tragic losses to the families of both my mother and my father. The Japanese executed my uncle Hayden R. Lawrence in the Philippines, and a sniper killed my uncle Eli A. Sanson just after the Battle of the Bulge. In researching this book, I wanted to reach a better understanding of the war that cost them their lives.
