This book began as a series of lectures given while I was a Visiting Scholar at New York University in the autumn and winter of 2016. My thanks to Professor Mike Williams, head of the NYU Program in International Relations, for the chance to talk Brexit in New York. My time at NYU was part of a Dahrendorf Fellowship at the London School of Economics, where I was working on transatlantic relations. This book was completed while a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute, Florence. Thanks to my research assistant, Alex Boyles. Thanks also to those who reviewed earlier drafts of the book, not least the anonymous reviewers. Their comments and feedback improved the book immensely. Finally, my thanks to Stephen Wenham and Jamie Askew at Policy Press for their immense patience as I finished this book.
