Preface
In 1988 Israel celebrated its fortieth anniversary as a sovereign state. A period of four decades seems long enough to provide social scientists with the necessary perspective for a macro-sociological and macro-politological analysis of a functioning polity. Yet, in the case of Israel such an endeavor requires a more cautious approach than in most other cases. Israel is still, in many respects, what it has been for forty yearsa society in the making beset by internal and external pressures and haunted by unresolved problems. From the viewpoint of the social scientist, these characteristics of Israeli society are a mixed blessing. On the one hand, multiplicity of problems stimulates research in the social studies. On the other, the volatility of a society in the making renders generalizations concerning its cohesion and stability tentative. Being aware of these limitations, the authors of this book consider it a challenge to attempt a comprehensive reorganization and reinterpretation of much of the available data on Israeli society and politics. We have aimed to place the interpretation within a coherent conceptual framework.
We have already attempted a similar undertaking in our previous study that dealt with the Jewish community in Palestine under the British Mandate and the Jewish community's transition from a community to a state (Origins of the Israeli Polity: Palestine under the Mandate
