Preface
When I wrote When the Eagle Screamed, I thought it was an important and originalthough briefcontribution to the literature of American diplomacy and its link to American cultural history and expansionism. At that time the Western allies practiced a policy of "containment" toward the Soviet Union, and I recognized a parallel when Britain tried to contain "Young America." In the 1830s through the 1850s, in what some have carelessly termed "the post-heroic age," the United States began to pursue its "destiny" on the continental and world scene. And why not? At the time European nations were pursuing their destinies in war, commerce, and unashamed territorial aggrandizement. They provided a model for the United States. They also provided the Romantic Era which so captivated America and stimulated even Thoreau to immerse himself in the travel and exploration literature of the far away and exotic.
