Historical dictionary of Israel: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Historical dictionary of Israel" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Few countries have been the focal point of more substantial and continuing international attention and aroused more controversy than Israel. War and the quest for peace have been dominant themes in Israels history and have affected all aspects of its national and international situation. Despite this preoccupation with survival and security, Israel has integrated millions of disparate immigrants into a single Israeli population. It continues the long history of the Jewish people in a modern state, and it has attained notable achievements in the sciences, arts, and education. Although much has been written about Israel, this volume fills a void in the literature by providing a convenient reference work in which the reader can obtain objective information about people, places, and events. Utilizing a dictionary format, it provides information on history, politics, international relations, society, culture, economics, military affairs, demography, and geography.

Editor's Foreword
Few countries have attracted more attention and aroused more controversy than Israel. An eternal hot point, it was born out of struggle and has waged several wars to survive. Domestically, it had to weld people of disparate backgrounds, and also different races and religions, into a modern state, a no less exacting challenge. Despite its diminutive size, it has played a notable role in international affairs, whether through development aid to the Third World or its influence on Middle Eastern events. Meanwhile, it has fashioned a unique society and created institutions like the kibbutz which intrigue outsiders.
Thus, unlike other volumes in the series of Asian Historical Dictionaries, the author's task is not to tell us more about a country that is poorly known. On Israel, plenty has been said and written. Indeed, some may feel that there is almost too much. So the author must primarily refresh our memories about crucial aspects and provide a handy reference to persons, places, and events. It is also indispensable to sift through the extensive literature, put the books in order, and point the reader toward more detailed information.
This has been done clearly, succinctly and comprehensively by Bernard Reich. As a leading specialist on Israel, he is familiar with the country which he visits regularly. He is also acquainted with the material and literature. Finally, as professor of political science at George Washington University, he has considerable experience in explaining Israel to others. In addition, he has himself contributed books and

articles, including The United States and Israel and Israeli National Security Policy.

This dictionary was a difficult book to produce. The first problem was to select those terms for inclusion which were the most central for an understanding of Israel. There is so much to write about and so much has been written about this small country that the need to be concise posed the most difficult problem.
