Sources from which statistics have been taken include UNDP, WHO, FAO, ILO, IMF, World Bank, ESCAP, PNG Bureau of Statistics, Bank of PNG, PNG House of Assembly, National Centre for Development Studies (ANU) and various publications of AIDAB and the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade. These are all internationally recognized bodies but the difficulty of compiling accurate statistics about a developing country should not be underestimated.
Permission to use the maps Regional Perspective, Boundary Changes and Provincial Government, from Papua New Guinea: A Nation in Transition (1982) was given by Robert Brown and Associates, Queensland, Australia. Permission to use the maps Ranges and Rivers and Elevation, from An Atlas of Papua New Guinea (1970), was given by the University of Papua New Guinea.
A number of people have provided advice and information for this dictionary. I would like to acknowledge particularly Dr Clive Moore, Ms Kathy Klugman, the Hon. John Waiko MP, Dr Bill Standish, Mr Peter Baxter and the office of the Minister for Development and Co-operation and Minister for Pacific Island Affairs the Hon. Gordon Bilney MHR. Finally, I am especially indebted to Dr Edgar Waters without whose extensive assistance this book could not have been written.

Editor's Foreword
Although part of the world's largest island, what has become Papua New Guinea was only "discovered" rather late and is still one of the less known countries. That is most unfortunate, because it is one of the world's more intriguing places and is currently undergoing an amazing transformation. While some PNGans still cling to the past, most are making up for lost time and creating a nation that will have little in common with the earlier colonies. Papua New Guinea is also resolutely joining the international community. Although with a preference for links with nearby countries, it has expanded its diplomatic and economic relations ever wider.
