The cover photo was taken in 1978 in the area of the Paulo Alfonso IV Hydropower project in Brazil, at the site of the Sobradinho Dam reservoir. In a village to be submerged, children and adults are tearing down the wall of a house, brick by brick, to salvage the few materials that can be reused. Some of the new houses of the relocated village, rebuilt on higher land, are visible in the deep background.
