In Zimbabwe, Rob Burrett was invaluable as a guide, historian, and sounding board, roles he continued to play long after I returned home. Im grateful to David Scott-Donelan for connecting me to him. Johan Hattingh ably guided me for part of my travels in South Africa; my thanks to historian Andr Wessels for the recommendation.
The librarians at Yale and at Stanfords Hoover Institution, which hold the Burnham archives, made my lengthy visits pleasant as well as fruitful.
Fred Burnham, son of Roderick Burnham, welcomed my interest in his grandfather and invited me into his home in Tucson, where he shared family scrapbooks and other material. Im especially indebted to Rod Atkinson, the nephew of Fred Burnham and great-grandson of Frederick Russell Burnham. Rod has spent many years researching his ancestor. He was always willing to share what he knew and to discuss any puzzling or thorny aspect of his great-grandfathers life. Im also grateful that the Burnham family gave me unrestricted permission to use materials from the Yale archive.
My agent, Deborah Grosvenor, encouraged me to expand the frame when thinking about Burnhams life, which I hope led to a better book. My editor, Starling Lawrence, saw the prospects in Burnhams story and offered several essential pointers that helped to clarify my views. Ryan Harrington at Norton responded cheerfully to every question or concern, and smoothed the books path toward publication. Copyeditor Allegra Huston sifted out a number of blunders and muddles.
As always, I was sustained by the heart and cheer of my wife Jude.
