Acknowledgments
The publication of this work marks the end of a ten-year research and writing odyssey. Reaching the end of this process, I realize that this book could not have been written without the help of colleagues, advisers, family, and friends. I would first like to thank my adviser, Charles Jelavich, who recognized my interest in Yugoslavia and encouraged me to pursue a dissertation in this area. I would also like to thank the late Barbara Jelavich for the support she gave me throughout my graduate studies. I am grateful to my friend and colleague Carol Lilly, whom I first met in Belgrade when we were both doing dissertation work and who has proven to be a fine critic of my work, an excellent sounding board, and an invaluable friend. A special thank-you is given to my Serbian colleague Momcilo Pavlovic *, who made sure I knew what a Serbian peasant farm looked like.
At the University of New Mexico, I received unwavering support from my colleagues, and I would like to single out several persons to whom I am under special obligation. Jonathan Porter and Richard Robbins, my departmental chairs, recognized the pressures that accompany a new Ph.D. and gave me time to rethink and revise my book. In addition, I would like to thank Rmon Gutirrez of the University of California, San Diego, who found a way to get me to California so that I could use the resources of the University of California. I am grateful to two of my colleagues in the UNM History Department: Virginia Scharff, who read parts of my manuscript and encouraged me to think about the craft of writing, and especially Jane Slaughter, whose patience and careful editing of several revisions of this book have made it a much better study. The entire volume would have been impossible without their invaluable aid, support, and friendship. Everyone should be able to benefit from such colleagues.
I appreciate the efforts of Catherine Marshall, Kathy McLaughlin, and Eileen Kiley of the University of Pittsburgh Press, who kept this manuscript moving forward, and the efforts of the two anonymous reviewers who painstakingly read the manuscript and provided invaluable criticism and suggestions for revision.
