Introduction
I
In examining the bibliography on the Spanish Civil War, one is struck by the paucity of material dealing with the role of all urban centers except Madrid.1 The capital city of the Second Republic was the most important center of military activity throughout the Civil War because it was the primary target of Nationalist military campaigns. General Francisco Franco and the other rebels reasoned that if they could seize Madrid, they would have control over the government, thereby bringing to a close the Civil War.2 Little work has been done by historians on life and affairs in Barcelona during the Civil War, even though it was Spain's second largest city, with a population of over one million during the 1930s, and was for a time the capital of the Republic.3
Barcelona is especially useful to historians of modern European history. Many of the events that took place in this Spanish community presaged similar trauma throughout Europe during World War II. Its political life was frenetic; its economic condition changed radically; and it was bombed, crowded with refugees, attacked, and occupied. Bombing of major urban centers was perfected by Italian and German air units during the Civil War, and one of their major targets was Barcelona. The use of combat troop transportation and the implementation of improved technologies in weaponry and logistical support
