Introduction
A generation after John F. Kennedy was inaugurated president of the United States, historians continue to try to make sense out of his presidency. It is characteristic of this effort that it is unfinished, for no history written is ever complete. Indeed, Nobel Prize physicist Richard Feynman, in expressing skepticism about the usefulness of the social sciences, noted that he was acutely aware and frustrated by the difficulty he had as a natural scientist in really knowing anything. As William Chafe has remarked, "historians are more properly described as poets and dramatists than as social scientists." For each, truth becomes a matter of the heart and mind, changing from era to era, fluctuating from writer to writer.
