Preface
The idea for this work first came to me in the 1960s, when I observed that the interval between conservative and liberal periods in nineteenth-century Guatemala lacked adequate historical treatment. At the time I was doing research on British Honduras, and I realized that the British minister in Guatemala City around 1870 was saying more about local politics than I had seen published. With an eye to the future, I copied most of his political reportage. When I returned to the topic in the 1970s, a search of publications on this brief period renewed my enthusiasm for the British outsider's analysis of events in Guatemala. Unfortunately, there were not enough sources at hand for extended treatment, so I published an article and went on to other things. In 1985, with the help of Thomas Niehaus of the Latin American Library of Tulane University, I obtained microfilm of the Gaceta de Guatemala (18631871) and the Boletin oficial (18711873), which together constitute the official journal of the Guatemala government in those years. This material completed the basis of the book.
A number of persons helped in this endeavor. Lee Woodward encouraged me to complete it, and he and Mark Gilderhus read the entire manuscript and offered valuable suggestions. Personnel of the Benson Latin American Library at the University of Texas, Austin, the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Biblioteca Nacional in Guatemala City were extremely helpful. My colleagues at Colorado State University deserve thanks for their support. In the course of preparing the manuscript, Susan Jones and Elva Flanigan taught me to use the word processor and printed many copies. In Guatemala, when I was young, V. S. Pinto Jurez helped in various ways, as did Fernando Snchez and the late J. Joaqun Pardo. More recently, Rigoberto Bran Azmitia gave gracious assistance.
