Tucked between Appalachia and the Deep South, the Upper Cumberland region straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line along the banks of the Cumberland River. Here, dating from the days of the nations earliest history, is one of Americas richest repositories of folklife. Rather than revealing an artifact, however, this comprehensive study of the Upper Cumberland reveals a living tradition whose roots in the past continue to nourish the present.Documented here in descriptive text, photographs, and interviews are varieties of folk cultural expression in music, architecture, crafts, schools, religious life, folk medical practices, and customs surrounding birth, puberty, marriage, and death. Upper Cumberland Country explores the spectrum of folklore from yesterday and today--from pioneer life and early folk architecture to teens cruising and women deer hunters. In a region filled with relics, modern voices from the Upper Cumberland speak directly of the living traditions that give the region its unique character. Though rooted in pioneer heritage, the folklife here springs into the present with resonant meanings for contemporary times.

FOREWORD
For over three decades, Dr. William Lynwood Montell, carrying his ever-present camera and tape recorder, has been a familiar and much-loved figure in the hills and valleys of the Upper Cumberland region of Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1982, when I first met him, he had already carved out an impressive niche for himself in the fields of folklore and oral history. In so doing, Montell had earned the respect and admiration of his peers as well as of the individuals whose lives and times he had chronicled in his journeys across what we here in north central Tennessee call "God's country."
My introduction to Dr. Montell, or Lyn as I have come to know him, was the result of the suggestion of a mutual friend on the faculty of Tennessee Technical University, who recommended him as a guest for "Tennessee Writers," a program that I produced and hosted for the Cookeville PBS television station. I will always remember my total absorption and absolute delight in Ghosts Along the Cumberland: Deathlore in the Kentucky Foothills, the first of Lyn's books that I read in preparation for the television interview.
That reading made me cognizant of the richness of my own heritage. Growing up in the Upper Cumberland, I had been aware, as had most young people of my generation, of the region's history and folklore but in a very superficial way. The stories that my older relatives told belonged to another era and another way of life, one that had little or no meaning in today's "modern" world.
