Acknowledgments
I am glad to finally have a chance to publicly thank the hundreds of people who have helped me with the research for this book. The administration at West Virginia Wesleyan College did everything possible to aid me; a sabbatical leave in the spring of 1993 allowed me to write the final two chapters. I especially want to thank Academic Dean Thomas Mann, who provided abundant encouragement and help.
Also at West Virginia Wesleyan College, I want to thank the librarians, who went out of their way to help me find the materials I needed. It was not easy to research Mississippi history from West Virginia, but the staff of the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library was not easily discouraged, and was able to provide me with a great number of books and microfilms. I especially want to thank interlibrary loan librarian Sue Dawson for her endless help.
The writing of this book gave me a welcome chance to return twice a year to my native state of Mississippi. While in the state, my home away from home was the Department of Archives and History in Jackson. The staff there cheerfully met a very large number of researchers every day and still provided a high quality of service. I owe a special debt to the staff of the Mitchell Memorial Library at Mississippi State University. They were kind enough to loan me hundreds of reels of microfilm newspapers on interlibrary loan, and to help me through the personal papers of a number of Mississippi politicians. The archivists at the McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi and at the John Davis Williams Library at the University of Mississippi provided invaluable help.
The early part of the research for this book came prior to the National Newspaper Project of microfilming and cataloging. Accordingly, I had the enjoyable experience of visiting a number of county courthouses and poring over the huge volumes of bound newspapers there. In particular I want to thank the clerks at the Pontotoc, Lafayette, Covington, and Benton County courthouses for their kind hospitality.

Outside Mississippi, I am indebted to the librarians and archivists at the Library of Congress; the United States Senate Library; the National Archives; the Federal Records Center at East Point, Georgia; the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina; and at the libraries of the University of Virginia, the University of Kentucky, and West Virginia University.
