Preface
Goethe once remarked rather modestly that "every one of my writings has been furnished to me by a thousand different persons." In writing my slender volume I too have profited from the council, critique, suggestions, and support of myriad persons. I trust they will discover something of themselves in the ensuing pages.
This project began over a decade ago when as a sophomore at Columbia University I was fortunate to enroll in James P. Shenton's year-long seminar on nineteenth-century American history. Out of that college course I gained two close friends. The first, Jim Shenton, remains an original. His catholic tastes, broad knowledge of history, intellectual generosity, and devotion to his students serve as a constant reminder of what it means to be a teacher. The consummate sage adviser, Jim read the manuscript at several stages, painstakingly edited many sections, and helped me steer it through the dissertation process. His support has been critical at every step.
Darren Staloff was a fellow student in that college class. Chess enthusiast, friend, coconspirator, and himself a historian, Darren uniquely combines a razor-sharp analytic mind with a furtive imagination. Far more than an academic, Darren is an intellectual in the best sense of the word. His sociohistorical musings about a "thinking class" were the genesis of my work. He has my great thanks for reading numerous versions of the manuscript and generously sharing his thoughts on early American history.
Two other graduate students played important roles in the development of my thinking. From Plato to pragmatism to pike fishing, Michael Sugrue and John Recchiuti have helped me hash and rehash my thoughts about far more than New England intellectuals. Generously taking time out from
