INTRODUCTION
Throughout the history of America, Massachusetts has led the nation in reform, industry, and scientific achievement. Its story includes many American heroes. Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to survive. Paul Revere called the Minutemen to action. Crispus Attucks, a free black, was one of the first Americans to die in the Revolutionary War. Lucy Stone braved hostile crowds to speak of women's rights. And John F. Kennedy, grandson of a penniless Irish immigrant, inspired the nation to greatness.
Geography has shaped the state's growth as well. Although one of the smallest states in the nation, Massachusetts contains a wide variety of landscapes. The western half of the state includes parts of the Berkshire and Taconic mountain ranges. Moving eastward, these hills give way to a plateau and then the fertile Connecticut River Valley. The southeastern portion is a sandy plain, providing beaches and secure harbors all along the Atlantic Coast.
Boston's harbor was a natural boon to the English colonists who arrived in the 1600s. The community would grow into a great port city, attracting immigrants and industry from all over the world. Massachusetts's rivers powered the nation's first mills. Abundant fish have been a source of food and economic gain for centuries. Today both the state's famous heritage and its beautiful natural features attract visitors from all over.
Massachusetts has a remarkable history of American leaders, reform movements, and advances in both culture and science. These contributions carry on today, and are firmly in place to guide the state and its people into the future.
