Preface
It is a pleasure to record my indebtedness to a number of individuals and organisations who encouraged this work. My early interest in language and nationalism was stimulated by a number of scholars who taught at the University of Wales, notably Colin Thomas, David Herbert, Peter Nicholson, Jack Spence, W.H. Greenleaf and Harold Carter. My views on the geography of nationalism were clarified by discussions with, and through comments received on the various essays by, C.F.J. Whebell, Don Cartwright, Wilbur Zelinsky, John Agnew, John Mercer, David Knight, Ron Johnston, Peter Taylor, Graham Smith, Eleonore Kofman, Neville Douglas, Stanley Waterman, James Anderson and W.T.R. Pryce. The Canadian material was improved by the data and critical comments I received from Charles Castonguay, Brian Harrison, Bill Mackey, Jacques Maurais and Ines Molinaro and the Welsh material similarly has benefited from stimulating discussions over the years with John Ambrose, Neil Evans, Dai Michael and Bill Raybould, together with other members of the Research Committee of the Development Board of Welsh Education, especially Cynog Dafis and Gareth Edwards.
