Preface and Acknowledgements
This volume is very much a companion volume to Language in Geographic Context (Williams, 1988) and reflects the steady growth over the past decade in the development of geographers' interest in language. In this context, the first international seminar on Geolinguistics was held in the Department of Geography and Recreation Studies, Staffordshire Polytechnic, in May 1987. The seminar was the initiative of the permanent members of the Department's Centre for Geolinguistic Research, Dr John Ambrose, Professor Colin H. Williams and Dr Stephen Wyn Williams.
The central theme of the seminar was the manner in which geolinguistic analysis could further our undertanding of the plight of linguistic minorities in Western Europe and Canada. Inevitably, given the under-developed state of comparative geolinguistics, there was an undue emphasis on case-study material, and less formal attention was paid to theory. However, we believe that the resulting chapters, together with other publications which were encouraged by the seminar, will contribute to the production of a wider base for geolinguistic studies. The ten papers presented at the seminar have been revised for publication, and I wish to thank the authors for their co-operation in the preparation of this volume. I would also like to thank Mr. M. Hellyer of the Canadian High Commission, London, for a grant towards the hosting of the seminar, and Professor George Kay for making the facilities of the Department available to seminar participants.
