To all the children in the world who will inherit the results of a million choices made before them and who, with love, may yet get the chance to create a new world for themselves.
Acknowledgments
I want to acknowledge my wife, Luiza, for all her support over the years and giving me three beautiful daughters who mean the world to me.
I especially want to thank my editor, researcher, and collaborator Leslie vanWinkle, for pulling this book together from all my ideas and keeping me on track. This book would not exist without her. Thanks also go out to staff member Caroline Fernandes for her help with our research.
Introduction
Thank you for picking up this book. It means a lot to me to get this message out to people. I hope you will be moved to talk to your friends and communities about the ideas you find here.
We are at a crossroads. Our global economic stability is in jeopardy; our planets ecosystems are under attack; physical health is not valued; and the westernized lifestyle is totally unsustainable. And we have run out of time.
Huge changes are coming whether or not we want or are ready for them. My gift to you is a book full of information that can help you prepare for, adapt to, and flourish during and after this transformation.
Here youll find a possible time line for the crash of the U.S. dollar and the subsequent collapse of global markets. I outline the New World Order I foresee taking shape over the next decade and the impact it will have on how nations govern, how businesses conduct transactions, how resources are managed, and how we as individuals will care for ourselves and the planet.
In support of this inevitable evolution, Ive identified industries, systems, and lifestyle choices that are unsustainable and destructive to the health of this planet and every living creature on it. Ive included warnings about potential obstacles and resistance this evolution may face from people who are seriously invested in the status quo. And there will be resistance.
Yet Ive also identified several budding social trends that, if supported by major changes in social behavior, could drive businesses to meet new demands and evolve into The Next Big Thing.
It wont be the first time Ive spotted a winning trend. My track record is full of them. Ive been an investor for over 25 years and come from a family with a long tradition of service in the financial industry. Between me, my father, my grandfather, and my great grandfather, my family has about 160 years cumulative experience in the stock market. Im well-grounded in the core principles of managing risk and investing wisely.
Still, I believe that it is my very unconventional upbringing that has prepared me for the unique challenges we are all facing now. That is why I believe Im the right person to write about what comes next.
I come from a family of great wealth, yet I spent many of my early years in poverty, and my teenage years at the Buddhist monastery, Odiyan. I understand the social responsibility of wealth, the pain of uncertainty, and the truth of our Oneness.
I have learned compassion for people damaged by life and have learned to respect those who courageously overcome their challenges. My spiritual training has given me mental discipline and objectivity, which allows me to see through misleading information the media feeds us, to see the underlying truth, and to trade what the market gives me.
Ive had a rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches career, and the hardships of my youth have taught me to remain fluid and adaptable even when circumstances change. And the world is changing very rapidly now. My whole life seems to have been pointed toward teaching me to think for myself and to stand by my convictions even when they arent popular or dont align with the conventional wisdom many people consider safe.
The truth is this: The economic situation in the world is not safe. We are at a crossroads and we need new ideas if were going to thrive. My goal with this book is to help you fill that need.
The current economic climate and the accelerating destruction of our environment and our bodies make our coming decisions and choices critical. I cant state this strongly enough. Our economy and our environment are at risk. Our very lives and the lives of our children are at stake. The time for denial and waiting for someone else to fix everything is over. It is up to us, each and every one of us, to wake up and start to make more responsible choices as we usher in a New World Order.
And that, my friends, will be The Next Big Thing.
Chapter 1
We Are in Deep Trouble and Were Not Alone
We are at a crossroads of immense proportions. Nationally, internationally, and globally, we are living in a manner that is absolutely, unconditionally, irrevocably unsustainable.
