Joining us in creating more meaningful working lives
Exercise A.1
- What uses for the Map have interested you as you read the book?
- Where might it already be influencing how you think about things?
- Do you have a vision for the ideas in this book?
- How do you see them developing in your life? In your workplace, in your community, in your industry, in your country?
- What role do you see yourself playing in this?
- What support do you need to do this?
- How can we help?
- What would you like to contribute to the wider community of people working with the Map of Meaning?
This book has arisen out of more than twenty years of ongoing work with the Map of Meaning. It has been wonderful work to be involved in, and also challenging. To try to put words to the inner world of meaning, and then to find ways to make this helpful to others, to organisations and society has been a long and confronting task, and ultimately enormously fulfilling.
Where does that leave us as authors? Where does it leave us as a group of committed practitioners? And where does it leave you? What comes next?
In this appendix we discuss our vision for our work, our hopes for the future and how you can become part of this.
We would not have embarked on this work if we did not think that it had the potential to contribute something of great value to our fellow human beings. The further we have progressed with it the more value we have been able to see in it. We hope that has also been your experience in reading this book and in doing the exercises.
The questions in the exercise above are based on the responses that we received from people who read the first edition and have done our workshops. Many have invented new uses for the Map and a number have made it a key aspect of their work. Some of them are the group of supportive practitioners that we have mentioned numerous times in the text. They asked us for this book, and it was largely spurred on by their demand and support that we wrote it. They also talked about wanting a community of practitioners and ways that they could get together with others who use the Map. In response to this we have set up the Map of Meaning International, a charitable trust created to offer information and a connection point for people interested in working with the Map.
Our vision has always been that the Map of Meaning is available in all parts of the world, so that all human beings can access and use it. Since it comes from the wisdom of ordinary people, we simply wish to return it to people. There are a number of ways that we think things might continue from here.
First, use our website : www.themapofmeaning.org. On it you will find different areas of interest: using the Map, the services we offer, future development of the Map and work to do with it, plus a list of certified practitioners, lead contacts in different countries, links to talks we have given, academic articles, etc.
Using the Map of Meaning
Copies of the Map
We are happy for you to download copies of the Map and use it. We offer two versions: contains the outline of the Map; both are useful for the exercises in the book. We request that you use both of these with the copyright attributed to Marjolein Lips-Wiersma.
Brief explanation of the Map
On the website there is a brief explanation of each dimension of the Map, which again we are happy for you to download and use. Again, we request that you leave the wording as it is and the copyright at the bottom.
We will investigate any breach of copyright. This is out of a desire to maintain the academic rigour of the Map and to ensure that the quality of the work remains undiluted.
List of certified practitioners using the Map
As you can see from reading the book, the quality of the work done with the Map is in large measure dependent on the people who facilitate or lead the work. The list covers the countries around the world and the people in them who are certified practitioners with links to their website or contact details. While this list is currently small, we envisage it growing. In the countries where there is no one presently working using the Map you might be inspired to be the person to start. If so, please contact us and we can support you.
Training and certification programme
We are happy to certify people who want to use the Map. To do this you will need to take a course with us that will provide a thorough introduction to the Map and train you to use it effectively. Please contact us if you want to do this training.
Community of practitioners
We have found that the Map really comes alive for people as they begin to use it in their own life and work. So, if you do an Introduction to the Map of Meaning workshop with us, you have the opportunity to join a web-based group that we support for a year. You also have the opportunity to join in any ongoing web-meetings that we run. These meetings, of practitioners from around the world, have proved inspiring and useful and we are delighted to continue to host them.
