Preface
New Mexico has had a long and eventful history. It was the scene of a very large population in prehistoric times, and many Indians made it their home before the Spaniards first came in 1541. A sizable number of Hispanic people made it their home when the Anglos came in 1846. The history of the state is the story of the blending of its Indian, Hispanic, and Anglo societies.
Its vast size, its location in the Southwest, and its varied geography have all influenced New Mexico's history. To understand this interrelationship of geography with history adequately, it is necessary to know the geography of the state, the location of population concentration through the years, the routes followed by explorer, conqueror, trader, and settler, the development of frontier posts and forts, the land system and boundaries of the state, and, finally, the state's economic development. An effort has been made to show on maps the places that have played a significant role in New Mexico's history. Some selection was necessary, as not all could be included. On the page opposite each map a brief account describing the map or what it represents is provided.
The spellings of the Indian names in use at the time the map represents have been followed. The names of places are those current at the time represented by the map. The names did from time to time; and, consequently, different spellings or even slightly different names appear. With a few exceptions, accent marks are no longer used.
The maps in the atlas are numbered consecutively. All numbers in the index are map numbers; there are no page numbers in the map section of the book.
Of the many who have contributed to the preparation of this historical atlas special thanks are due the following: the State Museum and State Archivist of New Mexico, the Bureau of Land Management in Santa Fe, the Department of Agricultural Economics at New Mexico State University, and the library staffs of the University of New Mexico, California State College at Fullerton, and the Huntington Library, San Marino, California.
The authors sincerely hope that this atlas will be of help to all those interested in the exciting history of New Mexico. We have labored to develop an atlas that will aid the professional scholar but will also make it possible for amateur historians, as well as students at the secondary and college levels, to better understand the historical-geographical relationships upon which the state of New Mexico has developed.
