This project grew out of conversations with colleagues at the American Historical Association meeting in 1986, concerning recent contributions to the history of late colonial and early national Spanish America. From our discussions it became clear that much of this new literature provided evidence of significant socioeconomic continuities over the period from approximately 1750 to 1850. This contrasted sharply with the conclusions reached in most other studies, which emphasized the importance of the dramatic political changes brought about by the independence movements. In fact, the findings of these newer works suggested to us that the traditional historical periodization and mainstream interpretations of the independence era needed revision. We decided, therefore, to bring together at the International Congress of Americanists in Amsterdam some of the principal scholars whose work was prompting this process of revision. The papers, commentaries, and discussions in Amsterdam covered a broad array of topics and geographic regions, beginning with the reign of Charles II (17591788) and ending in 1850. Our discussions of this transitional period made clear the importance of the colonial and early national states as economic actors. Following the meeting, we decided that a volume of comparative essays focused on the role of the state in the economic history of Spanish America had the potential to make a significant historiographical contribution and promote further research. We hope that our readers will agree.
As with all scholarly projects, we have benefited from the generous support and active collaboration of many colleagues. Jacques A. Barbier, Javier Cuenca Esteban, John R. Fisher, Charles Fleener, Allan J. Kuethe, Anthony McFarlane, Susan M. Socolow, and John J. TePaske all participated in the Amsterdam conference or subsequent discussions and have directly contributed to shaping this study. Others, too numerous to mention individually, have contributed to this project through their published work and presentations at scholarly
